In its 12th economic outlook letter, it first provides an overview of the situation in the standing timber market. "Prices remained stable between December 2022 and December 2023 for oak (0%), beech (+2%), and ash (+3%). Their level remains high. However, softwood prices declined during the same period: -23% for Douglas fir; -15% for maritime pine; -14% for spruce and fir; -13% for Scots pine."

Secondly, the public institution draws conclusions for the processed wood market. These conclusions focus more specifically on the period from July to December 2023. "Interest in hardwoods is evident with price increases for ash (+18%) and beech (+13%), both reaching their highest prices in five years. However, oak remains stagnant (-1%). Stagnation is also observed for softwoods with Scots pine (+1%) and maritime pine (-1%). Spruce and fir prices also decrease by 4%, as well as Douglas fir (-7%)."

ONF also comments on the wood market situation in France. In describing trends by species, it notes that "despite a decrease in 2023, price levels remain quite high." For spruce and fir, "the declining French construction market remains their main outlet. The value of sawn timber exports decreases by 18% in a year, and that of logs by 6%, mainly due to the importance of 'accidental products' sold at lower prices. Healthy woods remain at a good price level," explains ONF. Oak, on the other hand, "reached a record high in 2022 and remains at a high level in 2023. Superior qualities (boards and quarter-sawn timber) are in high demand, but less so for ordinary qualities. In terms of exports, the value of logs dropped by 35% in a year, and that of sawn timber by 19%." In its conclusions, ONF adds that beech "has made significant progress and is beginning to decline. The average unit price index of processed woods sold by ONF increased between 2021 and 2023. The value of log exports increased by 15% in 2023, and that of sawn timber by 1%. […] Douglas fir, whose price surged in 2022 due to high demand from the United States, is returning to a stabilized level of interest for a species increasingly present and harvested in French forests. […] Despite being from trees affected by ash dieback, ash wood sells well, at a higher price than healthy beech or spruce. Demand for exports is dominant, mainly towards Asia."

An average price of 80 euros

The halt in the French economic situation for several months, especially in the construction sector, does not seem to have affected the results recorded by ONF in the second semester of 2023. "Contrary to pessimistic forecasts, 2023 turned out to be rather satisfactory, and the beginning of 2024 follows end-of-year trends," writes the public institution in its latest economic outlook letter dedicated to the evolution of wood prices marketed in public forests. It specifies in its work that Benoît Généré, its wood market mission manager, "also predicts higher revenues for the National Forestry Office than the average annual revenues of the last ten years. The autumn sales of the Office were rather satisfactory, with an average price of 80 euros at constant mix-product (-3%)."

Prices in France are declining for softwood logs, and stabilizing at a high level for hardwoods, explains the France’s National Forestry Office (ONF) in its latest economic outlook letter, where it also comments on the wood market situation in France … Continue reading →

[4716

post-87463","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-latest-trends

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.9 -
