The mood in the German wood industry brightened in March 2024, just in time for the start of spring. <\/span>Companies were more satisfied with the current business situation than in the previous month and were more optimistic about the coming half-year. The assessment of the current situation rose significantly to -20 points in March (previous month: -29.1 points). The outlook for the next 6 months also improved significantly, the current value is -29.7 points (previous month: -42.1 points). Overall, the the Main Association of the German Woodworking Industries (HDH)\u00a0 economic indicator rose sharply to -24.9 points in March (previous month: -35.7 points).<\/p>\n

Given that the individual segments were affected differently, the mood in the wood industry remained mixed. Companies in the wood-based materials industry (+40.4 points), in prefabricated wood construction (+39 points) and in the construction-related sector of the wood industry (+28.8 points) assessed their current business situation as positive. However, expectations in almost all segments indicate negative developments in the coming months. In particular, the wood packaging industry (-56.1 points), the wood-based materials industry (-26.8 points) and the sawmill industry (-29.3 points) are currently worried about the future: These segments expect a significant deterioration in the business situation in the next six months.<\/p>\n

Given the huge demand for housing, the gradual resumption of federal funding for new construction in February 2024 is no more than a proverbial drop in the ocean and is unlikely to lead to a fundamental improvement in demand for construction. At the same time, economic growth is sluggish; the federal government's growth forecast for the current year was revised downwards from 1.3% to just 0.2% in its annual economic report. Consumer sentiment in Germany is also developing disappointingly. After the severe setback in the previous month, consumer sentiment in Germany improved slightly in February 2024. Although income expectations increased, there was hardly any change in the propensity to buy and economic expectations.
