<\/span>In Germany, the slump in housing construction permits continues unabated. The German Federal Association of the Sawmill and Wood Industry DeSH warns that the situation will worsen further. The current crisis no longer only affects the construction industry, but is increasingly becoming a social issue as the housing shortage worsens.<\/p>\n

What is now crucial is that the German federal government quickly implements the package of measures presented last autumn and adds further instruments, according to the DeSH. The 'Climate-Friendly New Building' funding program ( Lignum Journal online from February 7, 2023 ) was unexpectedly stopped last December due to exhausted funds. In February, the federal government made another billion available. 'We urgently need the announced construction turbo. This also includes a rapid reform of the planning and building regulations,\u201d explains DeSH President Stephan Lang.<\/p>\n

Stop and go when it comes to subsidies weakens investments<\/strong><\/p>\n

The DeSH sees the restart of the funding programs of the Kreditanstalt f\u00fcr Wiederaufbau (KfW) as an important stimulus for housing construction. 'However, multiple short-term stops and the adjustment of the funding framework have led to considerable uncertainty on the part of developers and investors. It is therefore important to avoid any further interruption,\u201d says Lang. 'In view of the low level of funding, short-term changes are to be feared here too.'<\/p>\n

Reliable framework conditions, a continuous funding framework and a stronger focus on climate-friendly building materials such as wood are needed in order to restore trust, sustainably stabilize the construction industry and advance the transformation of the building sector towards climate protection. \u201cTo ensure that the crisis in housing construction does not become a social crisis, a forward-looking construction policy is more important than ever.\u201d<\/p>\n

Timber construction initiative at the federal level without budgetary resources<\/strong><\/p>\n

What is of little help, however, is that the German federal government's timber construction initiative has no financial resources for this legislative period. This initiative was intended to strengthen climate-friendly construction with wood from sustainable timber management and other renewable raw materials and to reduce previous barriers to renewable building materials.<\/p>\n

According to the German Coalition for Timber Construction, only EUR 3.75 million is available for the construction of pilot projects at the federal level using timber construction. Things also look bleak with the Forest Climate Fund: There are no additional funds available for this from the Climate and Transformation Fund in the 2024 federal budget.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
