<\/span>A recent development in West Virginia\u2019s timber industry sees AHF Products securing approval for the purchase of two sawmills formerly owned by Allegheny Wood Products (AWP). The acquisition, approved by a federal judge, comes in the wake of AWP's sudden cessation of operations in February.<\/p>\n

The deal, valued at $7.5 million and confirmed by Wood Floor Business, involves the acquisition of sawmills located in Randolph and Greenbrier counties. AHF, a former lumber buyer from AWP, has strategically positioned these purchases to bolster its hardwood operations in Beverly, West Virginia, Greenbrier County, and Norton, Randolph County.<\/p>\n

Brian Carson, President & CEO of AHF, expressed enthusiasm over the acquisition, citing its significance in ensuring a stable lumber supply for AHF\u2019s operations and customers. Notably, AHF will assume responsibility for approximately 80 jobs at the two mills, previously facing imminent closure, and anticipates generating double that in new employment opportunities for loggers, truckers, and suppliers.<\/p>\n

The move comes amidst legal turmoil surrounding AWP, which faces a $40.5 million lawsuit from United Bank for outstanding loans and a class-action lawsuit from a former employee over alleged lack of notice prior to closure. AWP's shutdown on February 23 left over 850 employees impacted.<\/p>\n

The supply of Eastern hardwood lumber in the U.S. is currently 65% of what it was pre-pandemic and 40% of what it was before 2007. The purchase of the two sawmills recovers 100% of the lumber supply AHF would have lost due to the closure of AWP and secures a consistent lumber supply to protect AHF customers. These two mills combined will supply 25 million board feet annually.<\/p>\n

The acquisition of these sawmills not only secures AHF's foothold in the Eastern hardwood lumber market but also positions it to meet the surging demand in a sector grappling with supply chain disruptions. With lumber supply in the U.S. currently at historic lows, AHF's proactive investment underscores its commitment to sustaining operations and meeting customer needs in the face of industry challenges.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
