In some federal states, pellets now cost less than 250 euros per ton. And it looks like prices will fall further.

It is anything but likely that this will be the end of the price decline, as many factors suggest a further price decline in April.

Pellet prices continue to fall in early April. For the first time, wood pellets cost less than 270 euros at federal level. Regionally, pellet prices even fall below 250 euros per ton. That has n't happened in ages .

The market observers at Heizpellets24 say: “The price minimum forecast in the February news for the whole of 2024 of 270 to 275 euros per ton in Germany was reached surprisingly quickly. Customers should now closely monitor whether the downward scope has actually been exhausted.”

But pellet prices in Germany are currently continuing to fall and are reaching new lows in many regions. Many pellet buyers are apparently expecting a further sharp drop in prices with the imminent end of the heating season.

In any case, this is actually a typical seasonal price pattern. This year, however, the price fall started much earlier and was much more severe. From February to March alone, pellet prices fell by 30 euros per ton. Wood pellets now cost around 250 euros per ton in many regions.

The last time pellet prices were this low was in November 2021. In the federal average, pellet buyers are paying less than 270 euros per ton for the first time this week, almost 5 euros less than the week before. Compared to April 2023, wood pellets cost around 70 euros per ton less.

What is also important for pellet customers is that pellet prices have now fallen below the 280 euro mark in all federal states. In southern Germany and Thuringia, pellet buyers only pay between 245 and 255 euros per ton. Pellet prices in

Bavaria fall below 250 euros

It is anything but likely that this will be the end of the price decline , as many factors suggest that a further price decline will occur in April. Pellet prices usually only fall at the end of the heating season - i.e. in April. And many pellet buyers know this and prefer to wait before making their purchase.

So if prices follow their usual pattern and reach a new low in April , pellet buyers will have to spend a lot less money than is the case now. Wood pellets are cheapest at the beginning of April in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and Thuringia.

Prices of only 244 euros per ton are reported from Bavaria this wee . In Baden-Württemberg and Thuringia, traders charge between 251 and 255 euros per ton.

Pellet buyers have to spend the most money at the beginning of April in Bremen, Berlin, Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein, with prices between 277 and 279 euros per ton. Even in the "expensive federal states", pellet prices have fallen between 5 and 10 euros per ton in a weekly comparison and are continuing to fall.

With a view to comparing fuel costs, the advantage for wood pellets over heating oil has recently increased again, say the market observers at Heizpellets24. Heating oil costs around ten cents per kWh, while the kilowatt hour from wood pellets has fallen to around 5.5 cents. New contracts for gas are available for around 7.5 cents per kWh.

Pellet prices in Germany fall to new lows in April.
