At the beginning of 2024, the Chinese timber import market has shown a series of new changes.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to customs statistics, in the first month of 2024, China's total imported timber reached 5.077 million cubic meters, a slight decrease of 3.78% compared to January 2023; the trade volume reached 7.093 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 3.68%.<\/p>\n

Decrease in log imports<\/strong><\/p>\n

In January 2024, the national volume of logs accounted for 59.6% of the total timber imports, reaching 3.0277 million cubic meters, compared to 65.71% of the total timber imports in January 2023, a decrease of about 440,000 cubic meters. This change indicates that the structure of China's timber imports is undergoing a transformation, with the proportion of logs gradually decreasing.<\/p>\n

According to customs data, the domestic trade volume of logs in January 2024 reached 3.513 billion yuan, a decrease of 16.11% compared to the same period in 2022; the average price was $163.34 per cubic meter.<\/p>\n

Increase in lumber imports<\/strong><\/p>\n

In contrast to the downward trend in log imports, lumber imports showed strong growth momentum in January 2024. According to statistics, the total volume of lumber imports in China reached 2.0499 million cubic meters in that month, an increase of 13.29% compared to the same period last year. This growth reflects the continuous rise in demand for lumber in the domestic timber processing industry and the trend of diversified development in the domestic timber market.<\/p>\n

In terms of trade volume, China's lumber import trade volume reached 3.58 billion yuan in January 2024, an increase of 12.72% compared to the same period in 2023; the average price was $246 per cubic meter.<\/p>\n

Supply sources: decline in imports from Africa and Europe<\/strong><\/p>\n

In terms of supply sources, the top ten countries exporting timber to China in January were New Zealand, Russia, Thailand, the United States, Canada, Germany, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Japan, and Finland.<\/p>\n

Among the top ten countries exporting timber to China, seven showed an increasing trend in timber exports, especially the doubling of timber imports from Thailand, reflecting a rising demand for tropical timber in the domestic market.<\/p>\n

It is worth noting that due to unstable market demand and continued tightening of logging in European timber-producing countries in 2023, timber imports from Europe in January showed an unstable trend, basically showing a significant decline. Additionally, timber imports from Africa also decreased by 19.23%.<\/p>\n

Overall, in January, the domestic timber market in China tended to favor species from North America and Southeast Asia, especially tropical timber from Southeast Asia.<\/p>\n

Species: Significant Increase in tropical timber imports<\/strong><\/p>\n

In terms of imported species, compared to the same period in 2023, the decline in imports of Okoume logs in January this year was significant, reaching 67.88%. As mentioned earlier, demand for Okoume in Asian and Middle Eastern markets is decreasing, prompting timber merchants to slow down the pace of logging.<\/p>\n

Looking at the types of imported timber in January, there was a high demand for tropical timber in the domestic market, with the quantity of tropical sawn timber imported from Southeast Asia and other regions exceeding 500,000 cubic meters, with a growth rate of over 80%.<\/p>\n

At the same time, demand for pine and spruce decreased in the domestic market in January, with imports of large-diameter fir and spruce logs decreasing by 63.97%; lumber imports also decreased by about 20,000 cubic meters.<\/p>\n

Other popular timber species in the market, such as eucalyptus logs (+42.04% to 67,400 cubic meters), teak lumber (+106.35% to 30,800 cubic meters), large-diameter birch logs (+19.69% to 125,400 cubic meters), and oak lumber (+18.64% to 37,200 cubic meters), continued to maintain demand in the domestic market.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
