Wood industry associations from Austria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia criticize the EUDR's bureaucratic effort.\u00a0Revise EUDR and adapt it to supply chain processes and operational practice, they say.<\/span><\/p>\n

The EU Deforestation Regulation, or EUDR for short, must be implemented in the member states of the European Union by the end of 2024. The practical test of an EU information system for data collection carried out in January caused great dissatisfaction in the Austrian forestry industry as well as in the wood and paper industry. The EUDR is also causing annoyance in other EU member states. The wood industry interest groups from Austria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia have jointly positioned themselves for the implementation of the EUDR.<\/p>\n

\u201cTogether with the wood industry associations from Central and Central Eastern Europe, we welcome the goal of stopping deforestation worldwide. However, the Brussels regulation is the wrong approach. The EUDR means an immense amount of bureaucracy for our companies with large additional costs, without directly addressing the causes of deforestation on other continents,\u201d emphasizes Mag. Herbert J\u00f6bstl, chairman of the Austrian Wood Industry Association. The industry associations also fear negative effects on international competitiveness. \u201cThe benefit of these excessive regulations is incomprehensible, especially for countries that have effective law enforcement for forest conservation,\u201d says J\u00f6bstl.<\/p>\n

Pragmatic and practical implementation<\/strong><\/p>\n

The wood industry associations from Austria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia are calling for the EUDR to be set up in a completely new and practical manner in terms of content. Countries with stable or increasing forest area, sustainable forest management and functioning law enforcement should be exempt from unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles. It is necessary to extend the implementation deadlines. Without timely clarification of the fundamental substantive questions and without a technically sophisticated EU information system, the EUDR requirements cannot be implemented by companies on time, despite the most intensive efforts. In addition, the Commission should take into account the supply chain processes and operational practice and interpret the scope for interpretation in this sense. \u201cThe EUDR pursues valuable goals that cannot be achieved through bureaucratic obligations for companies,\u201d criticizes J\u00f6bstl.<\/p>\n

Alternative in the fight against deforestation<\/strong><\/p>\n

With a view to the upcoming elections to the European Parliament, the associations from Austria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia are calling for a comprehensive impact assessment of the previous Green Deal resolutions and their interactions for forests and the forestry and wood industry value chain. In perspective, the EUDR needs to be fundamentally questioned and revised after the European Parliament elections in June 2024.<\/p>\n

The timber industry associations are also suggesting more effective alternatives in the fight against global deforestation. The EU has exclusive jurisdiction over international trade agreements. \u201cThe EU should use this competence and reach agreements with third countries to promote social and environmental standards. \u201cIt is a breach of the system in the legislation to shift political goals to the company level through the threat of penalties,\u201d concludes Herbert J\u00f6bstl.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
