Finnish sawmill industry seems caught off guard by the ongoing strikes in the country. The port strikes have stopped the export of the forest industry.<\/span><\/p>\n

Matti Kyl\u00e4vainio, Chairperson of the Sawmill Industry Association, characterizes the delivery delays as significant.<\/p>\n

\"The repercussions of the port strike will linger until autumn. Recovering the transport capacity lost over three weeks won't be swift, given the limited availability of ships and containers.\"<\/p>\n

The shutdown of the pulp industry complicates the delivery of by-products, primarily sawdust and pulpwood, particularly at a regional level.<\/p>\n

\"If the situation persists without clarity on factory wood utilization, harvesting may need to halt, even to prevent wood blue staining. It's probable that sawn timber usage will decrease due to production restrictions.\"<\/p>\n

Jukka Pahta, CEO of Koskisen Oyj, also estimates that it will take weeks to alleviate the backlog of transport needs and restore normalcy.<\/p>\n

\"Finland's competitiveness with Sweden's industry, benefiting from a weak currency, is at risk. We aim to mitigate this through, among other measures, ensuring delivery reliability. Any disruption in this regard is highly undesirable.\"<\/p>\n

The sawmill industry's most significant development has been Versowood's announcement of negotiations affecting its entire 900-person staff. CEO Ville Kopra describes it as a precautionary measure in uncertain times.<\/p>\n

\"There's currently no need to halt operations, but we're monitoring the situation closely. We'll react on a unit-by-unit basis. The supply chain is lengthy, and at worst, we may need to curtail harvesting.\"<\/p>\n

A temporary blip in history? <\/strong><\/p>\n

UPM's response to the strike has been the most severe, with announcements of negotiations affecting all factories, potential layoffs, shutdowns of four factories, and interruptions in wage payments.<\/p>\n

Janne Kiili\u00e4inen, UPM's director of private timber procurement, asserts that strikes and factory shutdowns won't impact timber trade significantly. Harvesting continues as usual.<\/p>\n

Janne Partanen, Forest Director of Stora Enso, echoes this sentiment, stating that the strike won't affect wood markets.<\/p>\n

\"Domestic wood procurement is on the rise, and any reductions in wood usage will target imported wood primarily.\"<\/p>\n

Partanen stresses the consistency of wood demand.<\/p>\n

\"Timber harvesting is operating at full capacity, making the most of weather conditions.\"<\/p>\n
