In order to remedy climate change, the European Commission has set a number of demands on the member states.\u00a0The issue of increasing carbon storage in forests and land is included in the LULUCF regulation.\u00a0Sweden's commitment is to annually store an additional four million tons of carbon dioxide, an increase of nine percent, in forests and land until 2030. <\/span><\/p>\n

''We do not see that in such a short term there is any other option than to greatly reduce felling if we are to reach the goal, says Johan Freij,'' Business Area Manager Forestry and Agriculture at Danske Bank.<\/p>\n

The bank has used the Swedish Forestry Agency's SKA analyzes to present the difference in annual storage of CO2 when two different management options are compared.<\/p>\n

In the first scenario, \"Today's forestry\", the forest continues to be managed with today's methods and harvesting intensity.\u00a0The second scenario, \"Focus on diversity\", entails, among other things, that ten percent of the productive forest land is set aside and that the minimum cut-off age is raised by 10 to 30 percent.<\/p>\n

Drastic effects for the Swedish forest industry<\/strong><\/p>\n

The calculation model shows that the carbon sinking effect increases sharply in the first 15-20 years, then turns downwards just as quickly and after 35-40 years has been transformed into a steadily increasing carbon debt.\u00a0On average, storage increases by seven million tonnes of CO2 per year during the first 40 years.\u00a0Over the next forty-year period, storage will decrease by 24 million tons per year, and in the even longer term, the reduction in storage will continue, according to the bank.<\/p>\n

Danske Bank believes that in the short term increasing the carbon storage in forests and land to meet the EU's statutory requirements requires that the felling of forests is reduced.\u00a0It is believed that it would have drastic effects and mean a heavy blow to the entire Swedish forest sector.<\/p>\n

A reduction in logging by 15 million cubic meters of forest would mean that:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00b7 The sawmills are forced to reduce the production of wood products by approximately 25% or 4.4 million m3.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 The pulp\/paper industry is forced to reduce pulp production by approximately 10% or 850,000 tonnes.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Energy production decreases by the equivalent of 17.5 TWh.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

First effect - then hangover<\/strong><\/p>\n

Danske Bank believes that if forestry changes according to the described scenario, it is reasonable to assume that upwards of 10,000 jobs in the Swedish forest industry would disappear, that every fourth sawmill would be shut down and that two medium-sized pulp\/paper mills would be forced to shut down.<\/p>\n

Forest expert Johan Freij believes that the Swedish forest is not suitable for short-term measures.<\/p>\n

''That is really the essence of this whole future calculation.\u00a0It is quite another thing to plant, for example, eucalyptus, which grows up in eight years, on abandoned pasture in Paraguay.\u00a0Then you really get a quick carbon sink with the help of the forest.\u00a0In the Swedish forest, we are already at the top when it comes to carbon storage.\u00a0A changed forestry with greatly reduced felling had produced a short-term effect and then a hangover.\u00a0Should the person who has already stored the most carbon in the forest be forced to store even more?\u00a0That is the question,'' he says.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
