It's typical for the CFR price to decrease after the Chinese New Year holidays as Chinese industries gradually resume operations following the extended break. Post-holiday demand has been notably weak, leading to an increase in inventories to around 4 million cubic meters. While this figure is relatively low compared to previous years after the Chinese New Year, it still represents a significant inventory level given the current lower demand.

Foreign exchange rates experienced an early increase following comments from Reserve Bank Governors and a general weakening of the US dollar. However, shipping costs have posed the greatest challenge, particularly due to the increased demand for bulk vessels in the Atlantic following the Suez Canal incident, resulting in a shortage of vessels in the Pacific.

The outlook for China remains largely unchanged, with the property market entering its third year of decline. Despite pledges from the country's leaders to stimulate employment and stabilize the property market, practical solutions seem lacking. China also faces demographic challenges, with a shrinking and aging population impacting housing demand. The IMF has projected a significant decline in housing investment and emphasized the need for policy measures to address the role of real estate in the economy.

There's a clear need for a reduction in New Zealand's supply to align with the lower demand in China, which is gradually occurring. While supply from other countries has slowed due to various issues, New Zealand's supply is expected to decrease seasonally as weather conditions change. Longer-term fixed price contracts are increasingly important for forest managers to mitigate export return risks and provide exporters with committed volumes for planning sales and shipping.

Carbon prices in New Zealand have remained below $70 per NZU, with a slight rebound following changes in the government's methodology for calculating the reserve price in future NZU auctions. This adjustment follows a decline in prices earlier in the year, likely influenced by efforts to limit the auction reserve price.

Log prices in March have decreased by approximately $10 per cubic meter compared to February, a decline that was somewhat anticipated, but the extent of it is concerning.
