Recently, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) released a report stating that after the EU imposed sanctions on Russian timber products due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, a large number of timber products from the country are still entering the European market.<\/span><\/p>\n

Investigations and studies by ICIJ's partner organizations Paper Trail Media, Der Spiegel, ZDF, etc. found that the EU sanctions were poorly implemented and relevant inspectors in various countries were severely understaffed. Russian timber was able to enter the European market through third parties such as China, Turkey, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. , to circumvent the EU ban.<\/p>\n

The report by two other agencies, De Tijd and Knack, coincides with reports from other ICIJ partners in Europe, which found that national regulators in Europe are severely understaffed when enforcing EU regulations related to sanctions on forest products.<\/p>\n

Earlier, the Belgian Federal Ministry of Environment stated that the country needs 22 inspectors to meet the inspection intensity required by the European Union. A year later, Knack and De Tijd reported that Belgium had fewer than four full-time inspectors conducting sanctions-related enforcement operations.<\/p>\n
