There are fears that the political strikes which started yesterday, March 11, will cause permanent losses as production facilities need to be shut down.<\/span><\/p>\n

A two-week political strike is halting a significant portion of Finland's foreign trade and also affecting, for example, fuel distribution. Several unions affiliated with the Central Organization of Finnish Trade Unions (SAK) are participating in the strike.<\/p>\n

The level in which the Finnish wood industry will be affected is at the moment unknown, but there are clear consequences.<\/p>\n

According to Juha Mutru, the CEO of the Finnish Port Operators Association, the strikes have brought almost all operations in the ports to a standstill.<\/p>\n

Only critical products for security of supply and truck traffic independent of dockworkers continue during the strike. In some ports, a portion of dockworkers still come to work, resulting in operations being carried out with reduced staff.<\/p>\n

During the strike, congestion builds up in the ports, and according to Mutru, it takes weeks to clear that congestion.<\/p>\n

\"It takes weeks, months, to resolve that congestion, depending on the port. But then, when production facilities are shut down, less goods start coming in, out meaning the losses are permanent,\" says Mutru.<\/p>\n
