The mood in the German wood industry deteriorated further in February. Companies were less satisfied with the current business situation than in the previous month and were more pessimistic about the coming half-year.<\/span><\/p>\n

The assessment of the current situation fell significantly in February to -29.8 points (previous month: -21.6 points). The outlook for the next six months deteriorated slightly. The current value is -43.2 points (previous month: -40.9 points). Overall, the Main Association of the German Wood Industry (HDH<\/b>) economic indicator fell to \u201336.6 points in February (previous month: \u201331.5 points) (see figure).<\/p>\n

Compared to the entire manufacturing sector, the business climate in the German wood industry continued to be weaker. The value for the manufacturing industry calculated by the Ifo Institute fell to -17.4 points (previous month: -15.8 points), but was still above the corresponding value for the wood industry (-36.6 points).<\/p>\n

Given that the individual segments were affected differently, the mood in the wood industry remained mixed. Companies in the wood-based materials industry (+12.8 points), in the construction-related sector of the wood industry (+6.3 points) and in prefabricated wood construction (+3.3 points) rate their current business situation as positive. However, expectations in all segments indicate negative developments in the coming months. In particular, the wood packaging industry (-60.3 points), the construction-related sector of the wood industry (-45.2 points), the wood-based materials industry (-38.5 points) and prefabricated wood construction (-36.1 points) are currently looking to the future with concern: These segments expect a significant deterioration in the business situation in the next six months.<\/p>\n

From the HDH's perspective, this is primarily due to the declining demand for construction as a result of increased construction costs, poorer financing conditions and half-hearted support for new construction. The number of building permits for new one- and two-family houses fell by 40% in the first eleven months of 2023 compared to the same period last year, and building permits for multi-family houses fell by 29.8%. Given the huge need for housing, the federal government's resumption of new construction funding announced in February 2024 is no more than a proverbial drop in the ocean and is unlikely to lead to a fundamental improvement in demand for construction. At the same time, economic growth is sluggish; the federal government's growth forecast for the current year was revised downwards from 1.3% to just 0.2% in its annual economic report.<\/p>\n

Consumer sentiment in Germany is also developing disappointingly. According to GfK, both economic and income expectations as well as the propensity to buy showed noticeable losses in January 2024. The monthly economic indicator has been published by the HDH since the reporting month of October 2020. This is based on the monthly survey of representative companies from all segments of the wood industry carried out by the Munich Ifo Institute and is determined monthly.
