One of the most painful issues is compensation for forest owners whose forest lands are transferred to nature protection.

"Forest owners are not against a reasonable nature protection policy - it is in our own interests to preserve the proportion and quality of Latvia's forest territories. However, people throughout Latvia have found themselves in a state of lawlessness, because, although not formally, but in essence, their land is being nationalized," says Arnis Muižnieks, chairman of the board of the Latvian Forest Owners Association (LMĪB), emphasizing that currently, when determining the limits of forest land, compensations owners are blatantly unfair. 50 to 190 euros per year are paid for one hectare in which the forest owner is denied or significantly limited in economic activity, which may be even less than 1% of the real value of the forest. Therefore, the forest industry calls for immediate action to determine fair compensation that corresponds to the market value of the forest stand.

"The 'Green deal' has really become a Green Course rather than an agreement, because in the course nobody has to ask or agree on anything." Bureaucracy is growing with every regulation and directive, but at the same time, the "bloody" wood products of Russia and Belarus are still flowing into the EU. We see that other forest countries are fighting and proving deviations in the name of national interests, but for us, it seems that it has become a national interest to take over everything that Brussels wants," says Artūrs Bukonts, executive director of the Latvian Wood Industry Federation (LKF).

The Latvian forest sector requests the government to foresee fair compensations, as well as not to create new territories with restrictions on economic activity until fair compensations are implemented. It is also requested to develop a concept for the introduction of a voluntary nature protection system in Latvia and to prevent the fact that the forest industry in Latvia is placed in a significantly less favorable position than in other EU member states, while at the same time reducing the bureaucracy that undermines the international competitiveness of the forest industry. Forest owners, employees of forestry and wood industry companies will take part in the protest, which was announced by LMĪB and LKF.

Estonian forest owners do not rule out coming to the streets following the example of the Latvians

According to Ants Erik, chairman of the board of the Estonian Private Forestry Association, Estonian forest owners do not rule out following the example of their southern neighbors.

The Estonian Private Forest Association expresses its support for the Latvians. According to Ants Erik, chairman of the board of the association, the desire to gather in Toompea to protest against unfair restrictions has also been expressed among Estonian forest owners. "We certainly do not rule out taking such a step. We also feel that there are more and more restrictions, but there are no fair and immediate compensations. The obligation to preserve and save Estonian nature and to pay for its preservation rests with the whole society, not only the landowners who have managed their property in a nature-friendly way," he said and added that the goal of nature conservation cannot be the liquidation of private property. "If a private forest is to be protected, society must be ready to give something in return. Be it financial compensation or a piece of forest from the state's economic forest. Owners cannot be deprived of their right to be owners."

Drawing attention to the long-ignored problems affecting Latvian forest owners and all those working in the forest industry, the Latvian forest industry will hold a protest action in front of the Cabinet of Ministers today, March 5.
