According to the German Pellet Institute (DEPI), the average price is €314.30/t. Compared to the previous month, this is 3.9% less. Compared to the same month last year, when pellet prices were on the rapid decline from their record highs, this is actually 27% less.

Accordingly, one kilowatt hour of heat from pellets costs 6.29 cents. There is a price advantage of 40% compared to heating oil and 36% compared to natural gas.

Online trading with prices below 300 €/t

On the online platforms heizpellets24 and holzpellets.net, the average daily prices have been below €300/t for some time and are slowly continuing to fall. heizpellets24.de reported an average price of €294.94/t on February 16th. At holzpellets.net it is €298.59/t on the same day.

Prices for wood pellets continued to fall in February, but the curve is slowly flattening. Experts assume that the pellet price will continue to fall until around the middle of the year, to around €275 to €280/t. This level has already been reached on the trading platforms in some federal states, with heizpellets24.de reporting an average of €271.12/t for Bavaria on February 16th and holzpellets.net reporting €288.85/t for Baden-Württemberg as the lowest average prices.

The highest average prices by federal state are still over 300 €/t on both platforms.

The manufacturer's pellet stores are well filled, fill them up now “A moderate weather pattern with correspondingly cautious demand on the one hand, but on the other hand good production conditions among pellet manufacturers are the main reasons for the price decline,” reports DEPI managing director Martin Bentele. The pellet manufacturers' warehouses are well stocked.

In order to avoid any unpleasant surprises, DEPI recommends that pellet heaters regularly check the level of their storage. Due to the rather atypical price trend since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, it may make sense to replenish the inventory in early spring.

DEPI regional prices lowest in the south

In February 2024, the DEPI reported the following regional differences in pellet prices (decrease of 6 t): In the southern region, the price is the lowest at €310.07/t euro/t. This is followed by Central Germany with a tonne price of €316.76/t, and in North and East Germany it is €321.64/t.

Larger quantities (26 t) will be traded in February 2024 at the following conditions: South: €294.35/t, Central: €298.76/t and North/East: €311.15/t (all prices including VAT) .

Prices for wood pellets continued to fall in February, but more slowly than before.
