Production of wood products in Sweden decreased during the past year. <\/span>The pulp production stabilized thanks to a record-strong export to China. Raw material supply remains a persistent challenge. As Sweden's largest transport buyer with significant foreign exports, the industry is also affected by various logistic challenges. This is shown in the new market report \"How the Forest Industry is Doing\" by the Swedish Forest Industries (Skogsindustrierna).<\/p>\n

Wood product production, which was strong for much of 2023, decelerated in the last months, with a decline of 15 percent. For the whole year, it resulted in a total decrease of 6 percent, making the level for 2023 the lowest in eight years. Raw material supply remains inhibiting. Inventories have decreased, and a pressured raw material situation in Europe, caused by, among other things, extensive bark beetle attacks, creates uncertainty.<\/p>\n

\"We see a new situation on the raw material side. It is challenging in Sweden, but we assess that it is, and will be, worse in the rest of Europe. The market situation and raw material supply clearly emphasize how important forest resources in the Nordic region are for Sweden, Europe, and the world to transition to a more sustainable society,\" says Christian Nielsen.<\/p>\n

USA wants to build more<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the near future, the already weak economy seems to persist, but there are still bright spots. A USA that wants to build more with wood could mean new opportunities for Swedish exports.<\/p>\n

\"In 2023, there have been record exports of pulp to China, and there has been a recovery in demand for graphic paper, defying the long-term decline in the segment. Most notably, however, is for wood products where we expect the USA to pick up again and perform strongly during the year. But it is difficult to see that it can turn the wood product economy in the next six months,\" says Christian Nielsen, market analyst at the Forest Industries.<\/p>\n

Focus on transportation<\/strong><\/p>\n

The industry's logistic challenges involve both temporary situations, such as rebel attacks in the Red Sea and an unusually severe ice formation that required intensive efforts from the icebreaker fleet to keep the Swedish shipping lanes open, and structural challenges related to neglected maintenance of the Swedish transport system.<\/p>\n
