The latest data from top producer Canada showed lumber production fell slightly by 0.1% month-on-month in November but rose 2.4% year-on-year, pointing to a robust upward trend in the industry over the longer term.

In addition, Canadian sawmills shipped 4,271 thousand cubic meters of lumber in November, down 1.3% from October but up 7.9% from November 2022.

On monetary policy , the Federal Reserve is expected to keep interest rates at least at current levels through June as policymakers weigh signs of slowing consumer spending against still-high inflation and a strong labor market.

Lumber is expected to trade at $570/1,000 board feet by the end of this quarter, according to Trading Economics' global macro models and analyst expectations .

For the year, analysts expect global wood prices to be at $626 per 1,000 board feet in 12 months, around 10% higher than now. This could also be a possible trend for European wood prices , which have already risen moderately recently.

Wood prices follow the housing market - unexpected trends

Demand for housing and lumber suffered a significant decline . Lumber prices fell to around $400 per thousand board feet (MBF) at times in 2023. Significant sawmill closures were announced for British Columbia.

On the positive side, record high inflation in North America has fallen surprisingly quickly towards the US Federal Reserve's target. Incidentally, faster and stronger than in Europe. Other market indicators have also developed in unexpected ways.

On the one hand, the North American single-family home market recovered faster than expected in the second half of the year. At the same time , the U.S. labor market has been much more resilient to the Fed's sharp rate hikes and weakening of fiscal stimulus than most forecasters expected, Fastmarkets says.

Wood prices will rise in 2024 – forest owners fear for property rights

Labor market for new buildings more important than interest rates .So the bottom line is: the price outlook for lumber is uncertain and market conditions can change quickly, as 2023 shows.

However, too much focus on home loan interest rates misses the fact that a key prerequisite for housing construction is a strong labor market: there will be no new home purchases if people lose their jobs en masse.

Stable income prospects are necessary for households to be able to make a purchase - or get a loan - to buy or build a home, even in a rising interest rate environment.

A key question for the 2024 housing market - and therefore lumber demand - will be what happens in the labor market . This also applies to Germany and Europe.

Global wood prices have stabilized at a higher level. This was preceded by a crash.
