<\/span>Matti Kyl\u00e4vainio, the chairman of Sahateollisuus ry (Finnish Sawmills Association), predicts that there will still be a severe shortage of wood in the world.<\/p>\n

He justifies his vision with the fact that the world's largest softwood reserves are in Russia. Now the country is closed off from the world market, with the exception of China and Central Asian market countries.<\/p>\n

\"When the global economy takes off, there are simply no alternative sources of supply. There have been massive forest fires in Canada, forests in Central Europe have been over-cut for half a decade due to a chronic epidemic of bark beetles.\"<\/p>\n

In Finland, on the other hand, the supply of raw materials is secured for the modern industry, which, according to Kyl\u00e4vainio, means a golden age for both the sawmill industry and forest owners.<\/p>\n

Kyl\u00e4vainio's feeling is that this year will be low in the sawn timber segment, but the rise may start in the next two years and the golden times may come at the turn of the decade.<\/p>\n

The reconstruction is concrete and steel<\/strong><\/p>\n

Another future path is for the war in Ukraine to end and reconstruction to begin.<\/p>\n

\"It's concrete, steel and asphalt. Unfortunately, wood is an auxiliary material, but of course reconstruction also leads to an increase in its consumption.\"<\/p>\n

If Russia is accepted back into the international community, then the country's production chain, eroded by sanctions, must be rebuilt from stump to sawn timber.<\/p>\n

Kyl\u00e4vainio spoke this week in Helsinki at the Wood from Finland conference organized by Sahateollisuus ry. The event gathered around 500 participants from 34 countries.<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
