Additionally, government land sale revenue recorded a 1.8% increase from the previous year, marking the first rise in sales in two years. The resilience of the property market in the face of a ten-year housing supply surplus remains enigmatic, emphasizing the role of sentiment as a significant driver in the Chinese economy, which defies conventional economic principles.<\/p>\n

The New Zealand market, particularly in the context of South Korea, has become more critical due to the closure of several sawmills in South Korea. Although South Korea's volume contribution may not be substantial, its significance lies in its acceptance of non-fumigated cargo from New Zealand. With most New Zealand log cargo shipped on vessels with a significant portion on deck, the effective ban on Methyl Bromide by the New Zealand Environmental Protection Authority has led to debarking on on-deck cargos destined for China. A decrease in Korean demand further limits options for New Zealand exporters without access to debarkers or fumigation capabilities.<\/p>\n

Chinese log inventories have increased by approximately 50Km3 in the past month, reaching around 2.6Mm3, equivalent to approximately 40 days' supply. With the Chinese New Year celebrations prompting early closures of many sawmills, inventory levels are expected to rise to the mid-3Mm3 range upon resumption of work. Anticipated total log imports into China for 2024 are projected to be similar to 2023, slightly below 40Mm3, representing approximately 60% of the 2021 levels. New Zealand's market share has expanded to around 45%, despite a decrease in total volume. Reduced supply from Europe and the United States, coupled with the Red Sea situation, may influence future dynamics. Australia has resumed log exports to China, albeit in smaller volumes, with the majority directed towards India.<\/p>\n
