As the timber price frenzy is ongoing in Sweden, even Norway's timber market has come to life as timber flows in the Baltic Sea region change directions.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"In Sweden, the price of timber has even doubled in two years. Sweden is also becoming an exporter of timber instead of an importer,\" describes Per Hedberg, the Swedish CFO of Treebula, a platform facilitating timber transactions.<\/p>\n

The background of this development is the disruption of timber imports from Russia due to sanctions. As the demand for timber, especially for energy, increases, raw timber has become a scarcity in the Baltic Sea region.<\/p>\n

\"The economy is experiencing a downturn, but the price of timber seems to keep rising. What will the situation be when we are in an upturn? One could only dream of such timber price development,\" exclaims Hedberg.<\/p>\n

In 2017, Hedberg founded Virkesb\u00f6rsen, an online service in Sweden where forest owners and timber buyers can connect. The company has now adopted the name Treebula, with the aim of expanding its operations to Northern Europe.<\/p>\n

From Germany to Sweden, from Sweden to Finland<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to Hedberg, the Baltic Sea region is becoming an increasingly unified timber market area. Timber flows in the region can change rapidly.<\/p>\n

\"Now, timber is being imported from Germany to Sweden and Poland, where there is no longer timber coming from Belarus.\"<\/p>\n

Sweden is now importing timber from Norway, as Swedish timber is being transported more to Finland. Norway harvests just over 10 million cubic meters of timber annually, but the country lacks its own forest industry.<\/p>\n

Even the Baltic countries are not just a backup plan from which the Nordic forest industry acquires timber when needed, even at high prices.<\/p>\n

\"Timber from Sweden is being exported to the Baltic countries for pellet production. The weak Swedish crown has also influenced this development,\" notes Hedberg.<\/p>\n

Logistics deficiencies still hinder timber trade in the Baltic Sea region. \"For example, the needs of timber transport are not always adequately addressed in Polish ports.\"<\/p>\n

Prepare for price fluctuations<\/strong><\/p>\n

Per Hedberg believes that the demand for timber will remain strong this year.<\/p>\n

\"In addition to pulpwood, the demand for energy wood has increased significantly, so the pulp industry is now in a tight spot. There is a shortage of certified timber, and buyers are expanding their procurement areas everywhere.\"<\/p>\n

Hedberg reminds that the global situation is exceptionally uncertain. For example, an escalation of military tensions in the Baltic Sea could also impact timber markets.<\/p>\n
