Mets\u00e4 Group's result weakened significantly last year. Comparable operating profit fell to 488 million euros, which is almost 800 million euros less than the previous year. Turnover fell to 6.1 billion euros. <\/span>There was a drop of almost 900 million euros.<\/p>\n

The comparable return on invested capital dropped to 7.2 percent, while it was still 19.5 percent a year earlier.<\/p>\n

According to Ilkka H\u00e4m\u00e4l\u00e4, CEO of Mets\u00e4 Group , last year was a year of low activity and weak growth in the economy, which was also reflected in Mets\u00e4 Group's result.<\/p>\n

\"In the years of strong growth in 2021 and 2022, the rising prices of production goods partly reduced the conditions for making a profit. The long-term outlook for Mets\u00e4 Group's products is still good,\" states H\u00e4m\u00e4l\u00e4 in the press release.<\/p>\n

The group anticipates that in the near future the demand for wood will be focused especially on thinnings, birch logs and purchased wood. In energy wood, there is a demand for crown pulp and round wood.<\/p>\n

According to Mets\u00e4 Group, demand for lumber and also prices are expected to rise slightly during the first quarter of the year. The price of market pulp is also expected to rise in the first quarter. The company's cardboard deliveries are expected to increase in the first quarter from the previous quarter. On the other hand, the demand for wood products is not expected to change for the better in the near future, Mets\u00e4 Group estimates.<\/p>\n

Rauma's sawing capacity is so good that it makes commissioning difficult<\/strong><\/p>\n

The cyclical depression has not led to water-curdling austerity programs or plant closures at Mets\u00e4 Group.<\/p>\n

The news from the investment side is that a preliminary study of a commercial-scale factory for compressed packaging in Rauma has been completed and a decision on a pilot-scale carbon dioxide recovery plant is coming this year.<\/p>\n

In terms of the cooperative's goals, an interesting plan is to build a tissue factory in Great Britain. The project is justified by the steady flow of tissue paper, which is almost independent of economic cycles, and that the facility would use softwood pulp from Suomen mills.<\/p>\n

Mets\u00e4 Group's Rauma sawmill, which started in 2022, is still suffering from start-up difficulties.<\/p>\n
