However, this is not a real trend reversal. Demand for lumber remains very weak. The crisis in the construction industry is worsening. Forest owners also criticize the new forest law. In the opinion of the German private forest owners, this is an interference with the property rights of the forest owners and is clearly unconstitutional.

Sales of softwood sawlogs remained relatively stable in February. The prices for fresh spruce logs for the flagship range of spruce 2b+ are mainly between 98 and 106 euros per cubic meter. Regionally, prices for softwood sawlogs have risen slightly again.

For short wood, the prices for spruce 2b+, grade B/C are usually between 95 and 105 euros per cubic meter. Overall, prices have risen between five and eight euros per cubic meter compared to the last quarter of 2023. A slight recovery in the market for pine wood can also be observed regionally.

The industry's log warehouses are pretty much empty, so demand for wood is correspondingly brisk. After wood production was severely cut back by forest owners in the last quarter of the previous year due to falling demand , the sawmill industry is replenishing stocks in the new year.

The difficult weather of the last few weeks has made felling and transport even more difficult for German forest owners and has further reduced supply. The resulting tight supply situation at sawmills and the timber industry has recently noticeably helped prices for round timber rise.

However, this should not obscure the fact that a sustained increase in sales of sawn timber is not to be expected. The construction industry remains in a serious crisis. This has significant consequences for the demand for lumber.

On the world market, lumber prices are currently moving sideways at best. The expectation of a revival in demand for lumber in the USA has not yet been fulfilled, at least when one looks at lumber prices .

Industrial wood and hardwood with stable prices

The industrial wood market also developed relatively well in February. The significantly reduced demand from the paper, pulp and board industry is met by a small supply of both round wood and sawmill waste, report forest owners' associations. Energy and industrial wood prices are therefore relatively stable in February and until further notice.

Demand for fretwork logs is also stable and prices are also expected to remain stable until the end of the season (end of March), say forest owners. Oak has recently been in particular demand on the fretwork log market. This is also reflected in the quantities delivered in the valuable timber tenders.

Massive criticism comes from forest owners about the draft bill for amending the Federal Forest Act. Among other things, it is planned to restrict the choice of tree species, it is said. After that, forest owners would no longer be able to decide which tree species they wanted to plant. At the same time, wood production should be subordinated to climate protection. The criticism is that this would be an interference with the silvicultural freedoms and property rights of forest owners.

In the opinion of private forest owners, the federal government's planned amendment to the Federal Forest Act is clearly unconstitutional . This is the result of a report by the law firm Dombert, which specializes in constitutional and environmental law, and was commissioned by the associations AGDW The Forest Owners and Family Farms Land and Forest with the support of the AGDW's Operations Managers' Conference (BLK).

Wood prices in Germany rose slightly at the beginning of 2024.
