If there is a market that still challenges the current global economic lethargy, it is indeed that of ash. But for how much longer? The question deserves to be asked because the signals from its main outlet - Vietnam - do not inspire real optimism. Even if the demand from exporters remains present, recent examples show that everything can change very quickly nowadays.<\/span><\/p>\n

In fact, Europe absorbs the finest qualities of ash for transformations in cabinetmaking or fine woodworking (stairs, kitchens, handles, interior decoration, etc.), but in minimal quantities because the bulk of the volumes are exported to Vietnam. However, the Vietnamese furniture industry, which depends almost exclusively on international markets, is struggling. In the first 10 months of 2023, exports of wooden products decreased by 20% compared to the same period in 2022. A drop in global demand, irregularity in orders, rising raw material prices, production costs, and transportation costs... Everything is happening at the same time.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, despite these negative indicators, it seems that Vietnamese importers anticipate a recovery in the second half of 2024, leading to a continued purchase of ash. Thus, ash continues to break price records in French forests. In the fourth quarter of 2023, prices reached peaks at public auctions. Woods that were selling for an average of \u20ac130\/m3 roadside at the end of 2022 were negotiated at \u20ac160\/m3 a year later, nearly a 20% increase on an annual basis and 30% over 2 years (see table below). The National Forestry Office (ONF) notes that by mid-December 2023, the lots presented received 9 to 10 offers, and everything was sold, with some items approaching \u20ac200\/m3 shaped.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, forest operator and sawmill owner Michel Jacquin notes that French sawmills cannot match the prices offered by traders exporting ash in roundwood containers. \"When we propose \u20ac165-170\/m3 roadside for 1 m3 to 2 m3 logs, traders are at \u20ac200\/m3, and sometimes even more,\" says the manager of Bois 39.<\/p>\n

However, in the first quarter of the new year, a form of erosion could well be emerging for ash. The situation of the global economy is not improving, and the furniture market is clearly not recovering. Moreover, the insecurity in the Red Sea is leading to an increase in maritime freight, which is not helping the affairs of large-scale exports.<\/p>\n

This potentially bearish movement that could affect ash has already begun for beech. Most professionals report a clear decline in demand since the fall, especially in the Maghreb, India, and China. Sawing prices are affected, and in the forest, rates are eroding in early 2024. However, it should be noted that beech has just experienced a good period with significant price increases until last fall: +13% over 1 year and +25% over 2 years in shaped logs (see table below). White beech, which was selling for an average of \u20ac80\/m3 shaped in 2021, was negotiated at \u20ac100\/m3 in December 2023.<\/p>\n

But as with ash, the fine qualities of beech that go to the Benelux and Germany are nothing in volume compared to the quantities of redwood squares shipped to large exports. However, that's where the problem lies, and the tariff tensions that appeared this fall are expected to intensify in the first half of 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
