The fact that EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen promised farmers administrative simplifications at the EU summit in Brussels yesterday in view of the ongoing protests across Europe was commented on by the Austrian Chamber of Agriculture (LK\u00d6) President Josef Moosbrugger<\/span> as follows: \"It is important that von der Leyen wants to finally listen to the farmers. But what we certainly don't need are half-hearted 'sedative pills' to calm things down superficially. Rather, we need and demand a course correction of EU policy towards a real, eco-social market economy. This must We should give equal consideration to the environment, the economy and people and finally include our family farms again.\"<\/p>\n

On the subject of the EU deforestation Regulation (EUDR), Moosbrugger also says: \u201cThe best example of completely absurd bureaucratic monsters for the entire economy is the EU deforestation regulation. The goal of saving the tropical forest must be clearly supported. However, to apply the problem of rainforest destruction to all of Europe and Austria, where sustainable forest management is practiced, is absurd. In Austria we have been recording both an increasing forest area and a growing supply of wood in our forests for decades.\"<\/p>\n

\"Conversion of forest into agricultural land is subject to strict forestry law in Austria and is, if at all, only possible after strict examination by the forestry authorities. Nevertheless, according to the Deforestation Ordinance, all companies must now prove to the EU that wood, cattle and soy have been produced on 'deforestation-free' land. This involves a disproportionate amount of effort. There is therefore a massive risk that many, especially smaller, companies will give up the management that is important for climate fitness and protective forest function,\" criticizes Moosbrugger.<\/p>\n

\"The EU is creating problems and frustration where there were none before. We therefore demand that farmers in countries with demonstrably stable or increasing forest areas and functioning law enforcement are not paralyzed by unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles. To this end, the regulation, which is currently in the implementation phase, needs to be fundamentally revised. We also need the sustainable production of wood in order to get out of the climate-damaging, fossil fuel dead end. We need more bioeconomy and bioenergy and no additional bureaucracy,\" demands Moosbrugger.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
