The mood in the German wood industry deteriorated slightly in January 2024. Although companies were more satisfied with the current business situation than in the previous month, they were more pessimistic about the coming half-year.<\/span> In particular, companies in the German sawmilling industry and in construction-related segments of the wood industry were concerned about the coming months given the sharp decline in demand for construction.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the declining inflation rate and rising real incomes had a positive effect on expectations in the furniture industry and the wood-based materials industry. The assessment of the current situation rose slightly to -20.7 points in November (previous month: -28.4 points). The outlook for the next six months, however, has deteriorated significantly; the current value is -39.8 points (previous month: -26.5 points). Overall, the Main Association of the German Woodworking Industries (HDH) economic indicator fell to -30.5 points in January (previous month: -27.5 points).<\/p>\n

Given that the individual segments were affected differently, the mood in the German wood industry remained mixed. Business expectations in the furniture industry (-6.1 points) and in the wood-based materials industry (+4.3 points), the most important supplier to the furniture industry, were significantly more optimistic than a month ago. At the same time, expectations in the other segments indicated negative developments in the coming months. In particular, prefabricated wood construction (-35.1 points), the sawmill industry (-45.3 points) and the wood packaging industry (-58.9 points) are worried about the future: These segments expect a significant deterioration in the business situation in the next six months.<\/p>\n

From the HDH's perspective, this is primarily due to the declining demand for construction as a result of increased construction costs, poorer financing conditions and insufficient government funding. The number of building permits for new one- and two-family houses fell by 40% in the first eleven months of the current year compared to the same period last year, and building permits for multi-family houses fell by 29.8%. Positive: Core inflation excluding energy and food fell from 3.8% in November to 3.5% in December. Accordingly, consumer sentiment brightened in December, and this was also reflected in the stabilization of demand for furniture.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
