The New Zealand log export industry faces challenges post-Christmas, grappling with fluctuating foreign exchange rates, rising shipping costs, and a temporary dip in Chinese demand during the holiday season.<\/span><\/p>\n

Export prices in January have seen a decrease of a few dollars per cubic meter from December, primarily due to the impact of rising shipping and foreign exchange costs on profit margins. The US to NZ exchange rate has risen approximately 4 cents over the past 10 weeks, affecting profitability by around $3\/m3 for every cent increase.<\/p>\n

December witnessed a price spread among exporters, ranging from the high $120s to the early $130s per A grade short log. The current Cost and Freight (CFR) price in China stands at approximately $130\/m3, expected to be the ceiling for the coming months, especially with the approaching Chinese New Year holidays.<\/p>\n

Market inventory has increased by around 30,000m3 from November to December, reaching approximately 2.5 million m3. This upward trend is anticipated to continue during the holiday period as Chinese demand temporarily decreases.<\/p>\n

The focus remains on shipping costs amid the Red Sea dispute, with the Suez Canal's decreased traffic causing a 173% surge in spot container shipping costs in early January. This trend may affect bulk vessels, prompting attention to alternative routes, including NZ to China shipments.<\/p>\n

In other economic news, China faces challenges, as Zhongzhi Enterprise Group (ZEG), one of China's largest wealth management companies, admits to being 'severely insolvent.' ZEG's shadow banking empire reveals liabilities of $460 billion yuan and assets of $200 billion yuan. Furthermore, China has lost its long-held position as the USA's top exporter, with imports dropping from 21% in 2017 to just under 14% in 2023.<\/p>\n

Domestic demand for lumber remains strong, marked by increased orders in recent months. Pruned log prices are on the rise, with a forecast of sustained tight supply in the medium to long term.<\/p>\n

The Whanganui District Council introduces a target rating system for forestry to cover damage to rural roads caused by log trucks. However, concerns arise about the diversion of funds to other purposes, prompting suggestions for a point-of-sale levy to directly fund road maintenance.<\/p>\n

Despite uncertainties, the New Zealand log market remains cautiously optimistic, with forest owners recognizing figures over $120\/m3 as favorable, although unlikely to reach previous highs.
