The mood in the German wood industry improved slightly in December 2023 compared to the previous month. Although companies were less satisfied with the current business situation than in the previous month, they were more optimistic about the first half of 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n

The assessment of the current situation fell slightly\u00a0 to \u201328.9 points (previous month: \u201327.9 points). The outlook for the next six months, however, has brightened significantly; the current value is -25 points (previous month: -33.8 points). Overall, the Main Association of the German Woodworking Industries (HDH) economic indicator rose slightly to -27 points in December 2023 (previous month: -30.9 points).<\/p>\n

Compared to the entire manufacturing sector, the business climate in the German wood industry continued to be weaker. The value for the manufacturing sector calculated by the Ifo Institute fell to -17.2 points in December (previous month: -13.8 points) and was therefore still above the corresponding value for the wood industry (-27 points).<\/p>\n

The mood in the wood industry segments remained mixed in the reporting month. Business expectations in the furniture industry (\u20139.9 points) and in the wood-based materials industry (\u20139.4 points) were significantly more optimistic than a month ago. At the same time, expectations in the construction-related segments indicated negative developments in the coming months. In particular, prefabricated timber construction (-56.7 points) and the sawmill industry (-45.6 points) are currently worried about the future: These segments expect a significant deterioration in the business situation in the next six months.<\/p>\n

From the HDH's perspective, this is primarily due to the declining demand for construction as a result of increased construction costs, poorer financing conditions and unclear funding conditions.
