The outlook of the timber trade in China is significantly cautious mainly due to the current state of the country's\u00a0\u00a0construction industry, characterized as burdened with debt and lacking a clear path forward. <\/span>Representing up to 24% of GDP, the sector has contracted to 19%, impacting end-user demand for imported logs and substandard construction lumber.<\/p>\n

With declining construction activity, importers of substandard lumber are facing challenges. Lumber prices have seen a substantial drop from a peak of US$280\/m\u00b3 in April 2022 to a stable US$160\/m\u00b3 a year later. Seaports and distribution yards in China report notably low stocks of logs and lumber compared to previous years.<\/p>\n

In response to reduced construction activity and the demand for formwork lumber, certain Scandinavian and Russian lumber exporters attempted to raise prices in October. However, these price increases were not driven by demand, reflecting a general lack of activity and limited interest in holding inventory.<\/p>\n

Looking ahead, Chinese importers express concerns about the period post-Chinese New Year in 2024. The aftermath of Covid lockdowns in 2023 led to unexpected market dynamics, prompting over-purchasing of high-priced lumber across categories in the first quarter. Importers are now exercising caution, monitoring purchases to navigate potential market shifts after the upcoming Chinese New Year.<\/p>\n

In the short term, exporters are advised to pay attention to shipping volumes, considering the potential impact of lower demand or excess inventory post-Chinese New Year on future operations in China.
