Last year's wood trade in Finland was lower in terms of volume than the previous one, as it was frozen in the autumn due to the weaker-than-anticipated development of the economy.\u00a0The year that has started, on the other hand, looks promising.<\/span><\/p>\n

The current year's financial situation is seen to improve slightly, for example as the interest rate falls, leaving people with more money for consumption.\u00a0In the Finnish forest industry, as a cyclical sector, we are already seeing signs of recovery.\u00a0Due to the weak wood trade in the fall and the good harvesting conditions in the early winter, there has been a growing demand even for winter harvesting sites, and due to the severe frosts, energy wood stocks have also dwindled quickly.\u00a0The importance and demand for wood trade services of forest management associations is growing, which is reflected in the higher prices of competitive wood trades.\u00a0So the year that has started looks promising for a forest owner considering selling wood.<\/p>\n

Last year, Mets\u00e4teollisuus ry's member companies' volume of wood sales was just under 33 million cubic meters (-8%).\u00a0The Finnish Natural Resources Agency has not yet announced a more comprehensive timber sales volume for the whole year, but it will probably be in the same direction.\u00a0Although the beginning of the year was an accelerating time for timber trade, it froze in the summer due to the weakened economic situation.\u00a0A small budding recovery was only noticeable towards the end of the year.\u00a0Harvest quantities behaved similarly, but started to rise more quickly in the fall.\u00a0The winter harvesting sites were already reached in December due to the earlier winter.\u00a0The interest in buying winter harvest items has been good recently.\u00a0This is quite exceptional and indicates that the traditional autumn purchases of wood were not successful and the stock quantities have dwindled rapidly.<\/p>\n

It is also unusual for prices to rise when demand is focused on winter harvest destinations.\u00a0Traditionally, winter harvesting sites are priced lower than summer harvesting sites.\u00a0This is quite natural, because sites that can be harvested in winter are technically more expensive to harvest and there are more of them available.\u00a0The prices of wood have therefore started to rise and the activity of demand is focused on thinning stamps.\u00a0On the other hand, the demand for end cuts is already recovering.\u00a0The increase in prices indicates the strengthening of demand.<\/p>\n

The average price level for wood has been on the rise for many years, although there have been fluctuations within the year.\u00a0Mets\u00e4teollisuus ry reports that last year the average cost of softwood logs increased by 4\u20136 percent from the previous year, and that of birch logs by seventeen percent.\u00a0The prices of pulpwood rose by 23\u201330 percent.\u00a0This indicates that there has been more demand for domestic wood than supply due to the decrease in wood imports.\u00a0On the other hand, it also shows that there has been genuine competition for wood on the market.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
