But this is not a radical market change. Some observers fear that the major sales crisis is yet to come. Because the construction industry continues to shrink. Hardwood prices are now also coming under pressure.

The prices for fresh spruce logs in the main range are around 95 euros per cubic meter. Regional deviations of up to plus/minus 5 euros per cubic meter around this average occur. The prices for spruce A/C 2b+ have increased slightly regionally, especially in the lower price range.

In the main beetle areas, where there was also a lot of storm wood, a lower price level remained at the lower edge of the fluctuation range mentioned, i.e. around 90 euros per cubic meter. Forest owners' associations in Germany report that a three-digit price is being sought for the supply contracts for the first quarter and first half of 2024 . However, this is likely to be difficult in many regions.

In addition to the sawmills, German log exporters are also once again inquiring as buyers, it is reported. One reason is that world market prices for lumber have recently risen slightly again and a significant increase in demand for lumber is expected in the USA in 2024. However, that is not certain. Some of the calamity wood is also exported, usually mixed with fresh wood.

Demand for logs from pine, Douglas fir and larch continues to be rather cautious. The price development is inconsistent . Pine logs of normal quality and strength class L2b will be traded for between 70 and 75 euros per cubic meter. The weaker and poorer quality types of spruce wood, which are processed as so-called pallet wood, have recently been in slightly better demand again.

Timber prices continue to fall in Germany– hardwood is also under pressure

The direction in which the German wood market and wood prices will move over the course of the year remains extremely uncertain. The construction crisis in particular is likely to continue to have a massive impact on demand and wood prices . According to Destatis, the sales prices for construction timber in the industry were recently 17.3% below the previous year.

At the same time, Destatis reported producer prices for spruce logs to be around 10.5% lower than in the previous year. It is feared that the poor situation in the construction industry will continue to impact demand from sawmills and the sales opportunities of forest owners. Often, existing order backlogs are primarily processed.

Some forest owners hope that the demand for wood for building renovations and the export of round and sawn timber can at least partially fill the resulting sales gap. But that seems rather unlikely once you see the dimensions of the construction crisis, which apparently has not yet reached its peak.

Some German forest owners report that the crisis has already reached the hardwood sawmills. Their sales depend to a large extent on the demand from the furniture industry and wooden floor manufacturers. Both groups of buyers are caught in the wake of the overall economic crisis.

Hardwood sawmills have therefore noticeably reduced their purchases of logs . This could soon have an impact on hardwood prices, which have been relatively stable until recently. Beech wood processors based in Germany have announced that they only want to purchase half of last year's volume, market observers report.

Sales crisis not over – building a house is no longer affordable

Wood prices are unlikely to stabilize so quickly, says the managing director of the Erding Forest Owners Association, Rainer Mehringer, in the Süddeutsche Zeitung . When it comes to supply and demand, the amount of damaged wood caused by storms and bark beetles and how it can be marketed also play a role, says the expert. Bark beetles and storms keep causing the wood market to fluctuate, says Mehringer. Around 50 percent of the amount of wood harvested in Bavaria is damaged wood. The wood market expert is convinced that a hurricane “and prices will fall to the bottom again.”

Mehringer is also observing changes in the lumber market : The classic single-family home is currently no longer affordable for many young families. Instead, more wood will flow into renovations, additions and conversions in the future. The industrial wood market is currently relatively balanced, but prices for industrial softwood have fallen by 15% in the last 6 months, Destatis data shows. However, weak demand from the paper, pulp and board industries is met with reduced supply. Because of the poor prices, some industrial roundwood is also diverted for energy recovery. The energy wood market is well supplied. According to Destatis data, prices here have fallen by over 20% since the beginning of the year.

Wood prices in Germany have recently recovered slightly.
