Storms, extreme drought, and bark beetles have, since the drought year of 2018, killed more than 500,000 hectares of forest, and 255 million m3 of damaged timber has been emergency felled. The extent of the damage is estimated to amount to around 20 billion euros, and approximately 20 percent of the entire spruce volume has been harvested. Bark beetle clearcuts correspond to about 5 percent of the total forest area in Germany.

The damages are concentrated around a belt through central Germany, from Saxony in the east to Eifel in the west, where the western areas and Harz are particularly hard-hit. And when half a million hectares need to be replanted, the Germans will introduce a new forestry adapted to the upcoming climate changes. Much of it involves significantly reducing the proportion of spruce. Originally, the shade-tolerant beech dominated the forests in Germany, while spruce had its natural niche mainly in the highlands from around 900 meters above sea level. However, the species was planted on a large scale even in areas where it does not thrive today, and spruce forest accounted for about a quarter of the forest area before 2018.

The inflexible spruce fell victim to drought in Germany. "Spruce needs to be damp and cool," says Sonja Klotz, a climate expert. This became very apparent when the dry summer of 2018 hit. The drought shattered all boundaries and reached down to 1.8 meters deep in large parts of Germany. The subsequent unusually dry years only worsened the situation. Drought and heatwaves also led to some severe forest fire seasons in 2018 and 2019, but the most devastating impact was that the drought-weakened spruce forests became an easy target for bark beetles, explains Sonja. She and her husband, Timo Schmitt, reside in Hümmel in Rheinland-Pfalz and have worked in various capacities within German forestry. Schmitt currently serves as the forestry manager in the municipal forest of Hümmel in Eifel. Right there, the high proportion of deciduous trees has saved much of the forest from the worst bark beetle damage.

"So far. But we see a lot of damaged spruce forests in the surroundings," says Sonja.

The decline of spruce and the rise of beech

The aftermath of this extensive logging has left 500,000 hectares of forestland ready for regeneration. However, with the uncertainties surrounding global warming and climate change predictions, there is a growing consensus that spruce might not have a viable future in these regions. Climate expert Sonja Klotz emphasizes that spruce thrives in damp and cool conditions, which became evident during the severe drought of 2018.

"That dry summer broke all records, with drought reaching depths of 1.8 meters in large parts of Germany. Subsequent years of unusual dryness exacerbated the situation. The weakened spruce forests, susceptible to drought and heatwaves, became easy prey for bark beetles," explains Klotz. She and her husband, Timo Schmitt, residing in Hümmel in Rheinland-Pfalz, emphasize that the prevalence of hardwood trees in certain areas, like Hümmel in Eifel, has shielded the forest from severe bark beetle damage.

Adapting forestry to climate challenges

Faced with the prospect of replanting half a million hectares, German foresters are now adopting a new approach tailored to climate change. The focus is on diversifying tree species and reducing reliance on uniform spruce plantations. Schmitt, managing the 750-hectare municipal forest in Hümmel, underscores the importance of maintaining a diverse and layered forest.

"Currently, over a third of our area comprises spruce, but it constitutes a more significant portion of the forest ready for logging due to extensive damages. As a result, standing spruce volume is expected to decrease significantly in the future. The latest forestry plan forecasts an increase in the beech share from 23% to 38% over the next 20 years," explains Schmitt.

Exploring new species for climate resilience

While the industry traditionally favors spruce and other softwoods, adapting to climate challenges necessitates a shift in perspective. Foresters are now exploring alternative coniferous species that have demonstrated better resistance over the past five years. Schmitt and Klotz highlight a trend where German foresters are venturing southwards to warmer regions in search of tree species adaptable to changing temperatures.

"We must prioritize tree species suitable for the region, even if they are not native. Nature needs assistance in establishing new species that can withstand evolving climate conditions," says Klotz. Douglas fir and Grand fir, known for their deep roots providing resistance to drought, are among the conifers gaining attention. Larch, considered native, is also being reintroduced.

Product development for new resources

Recognizing the industry's demand for softwoods, especially spruce, there is a simultaneous effort within the sector to adapt to changing realities. Sonja Klotz discusses how product development is crucial to increasing demand for hardwood. She mentions the introduction of "BauBuche," a laminated veneer lumber product based on beech, as a substitute for construction timber, traditionally dominated by spruce.

In just five years, climate catastrophes have compelled Germans to rethink their approach to spruce forestry, and the consequences are profound, not only for the industry but for the future supply of raw materials.

Germany's forests - €900 Million for Transition

Recognizing the severe impacts of climate change on forestry in the past five years, the German government has established a €900 million fund for "climate-adapted forestry." The fund aims to build more climate-resilient forests for the future, acknowledging the need for measures that can address climate change. Launched in November 2022, the initiative emphasizes transitioning to a more diverse and deciduous-dominated mixed forest, ensuring a steady supply of raw materials in the face of climate disasters.

As part of German forest policy, climate-resilient forests will maintain a greater diversity of forest functions, including ecosystem services like water management and enhanced biodiversity protection. The 12 criteria outlined in the initiative seek to make forests more resilient to climate change, with landowners receiving support to implement projects aligned with these criteria. The requirements surpass both certification systems and legislation.

Climate change has hit Germany with full force over the past five years.
