{"id":87118,"date":"2023-12-14T08:26:57","date_gmt":"2023-12-14T08:26:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tin.happy-projects.ro\/the-demand-for-wood-has-cooled-in-lithuania\/"},"modified":"2025-09-19T09:01:16","modified_gmt":"2025-09-19T09:01:16","slug":"the-demand-for-wood-has-cooled-in-lithuania","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.timberindustrynews.com\/ro\/the-demand-for-wood-has-cooled-in-lithuania\/","title":{"rendered":"The demand for wood has cooled in Lithuania"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For the second year in a row, the demand for structural wood products intended for construction is declining not only in Lithuania, but also in many countries around the world. <span id=\"more-34328\"><\/span>However, UAB Med\u017eio bit\u0117s, which has been selling high-quality wood products for 9 years, grew by almost 31% last year, and this year it has already opened two new wood terminals-stores in the country.\u00a0What helps to maintain growth and development in a cooling market, we talk to Martyn Jan\u0117nu, the manager of the Lithuanian company Me\u0111zio bit\u0117s.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How has the construction wood market changed in Lithuania in recent years?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The need for construction timber is dictated by several factors: the dynamics of construction in Lithuania and the construction situation in the markets of other countries, where Lithuanian manufacturers, especially of wooden constructions, have their main customers.\u00a0Among such countries, it is necessary to mention the markets of Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, because the markets of other countries make up a small part.<\/p>\n<p>When talking about the situation in Lithuania, let's rely on the data of the Registry Center.\u00a0in 2023\u00a0in January-July, almost 6,100 individual residential house sales were registered in Lithuania - 23% less than in the same period last year, when 7,900 house sales were registered.\u00a0And in 2022\u00a0in January-July, almost 14% less than in 2021 was registered.\u00a0This significant contraction affects the demand for various building materials, including construction timber.\u00a0In our estimation, the demand for wood for construction fell by about 30% during the year.\u00a0But if we evaluate the manufacturers of wooden constructions, such as frame or panel houses, then, according to our calculations, the contraction in the last year is even about 50%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You mentioned countries that are particularly significant for Lithuanian manufacturers of structural wood products.\u00a0What are the market dynamics of these countries?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In short, it is a big concern so far, and the trends are not encouraging for our country's wood producers.\u00a0Specialists unanimously claim that European construction is already experiencing a serious crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Here, the authoritative European construction forecasting network Euroconstruct, which is associated with the well-known German economic research institute Ifo, calculates that, compared to this year, by 2025\u00a0residential construction will decrease by 39% in Sweden, 33% in Denmark, 32% in Germany, and 29% in Hungary.\u00a0The first three markets and Scandinavia in general are particularly significant for the business of our country, which is related to the production of wood for the construction industry.\u00a0Of course, there are countries in Europe where construction is increasing, but these markets do not have a significant impact on the wood industry of our country, for example, in Ireland, the growth of new construction is planned at 17%, in Portugal - 15%, in Spain - 12%, in Slovakia - 11%.<\/p>\n<p>The data of the latest Ifo research make our country's structural wood producers even more confused.\u00a0After comparing the\u00a0spring and late summer orders from European construction companies, Ifo notes that there is an increasing number of companies complaining about having too few orders.\u00a0There are 34.5% of such companies - the most since 2010.\u00a0April.\u00a0Even worse: the share of canceled construction orders reached a new record of 19.2%.\u00a0It is clear that these are bad trends and bad news for the entire European forest and timber industry.<\/p>\n<p>However, we see other trends in neighboring countries.\u00a0Deforestation and, consequently, the supply of raw materials have decreased in the main supply markets for forest raw materials in Northern Europe.\u00a0These and other aspects led to the fact that the price of wood stabilized and will remain similar in the near future, according to our forecasts - for the next 3-4 months.\u00a0And in the spring, when the demand jumps, the price of wood is always a little higher.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For the second year in a row, the demand for structural wood products intended for construction is declining not only in Lithuania, but also in many countries around the world.
