But also commercially, hardwood trees are becoming more and more attractive. Hardwood is indispensable in many paper grades and has a much higher energy value than spruce and pine. The next step will be a sawmill. The proportion of forests with mixed leaves will increase sharply in the future,'' says Johan Freij, forest expert at Danske Bank.

More hardwood in the forest

The volume of hardwood forest has increased by 34 percent since the turn of the millennium. This can be compared with the softwood volume, which has increased by eleven percent. Today, hardwood accounts for 20.5 percent of the total volume in the country. Skåne, with its 50 percent hardwood forest, is the region with by far the largest share of hardwood forest volume. Blekinge has the second largest proportion of hardwood with just under 35 percent. The smallest percentage of is found in Dalarna, with around 14 percent.

Birch is unsurprisingly the dominant tree species among the hardwoods, accounting for two-thirds of the total hardwood volume. The changing climate, which increases the risks in the forest, makes mixed forests increasingly important. The mixing of, for example, birch and aspen will become more common, the experts believe.

The Norwegian Forestry Agency predicts that the share of hadwood forests will double in the next 50 years. Swedish forest owners will likely plant fewer softwood saplings in areas where the birch can easily self-rejuvenate and that more will let the birch trunks remain and grow even after thinning.

The commercial value of hardwood forests continues to increase among Sweden’s forest owners.
