Wood prices are still surprisingly high in Finland. The wood market will continue to be tight, and the new EU regulation worries industry players.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Finnish forest industry is doing badly as the prices of wood have not really relaxed.<\/p>\n

\"In this economic cycle, wood prices have not reacted downward in the normal way,\" says OP portfolio manager Tapio Tilli. He manages the bank's forest fund.<\/p>\n

\"We have made the first wood purchases for next year. Wood is still traded at a surprisingly high price level.\"<\/p>\n

The import of wood from Russia stopped last year, and the wood market tightened. Procurement has been replaced by domestic wood and some imports from Sweden and the Baltic countries, but the competition for wood is fierce, as more and more of it is also used for energy use.<\/p>\n

In addition, new factories are emerging in Finland to compete for raw wood. It is also not worth bringing to Finland from far away.<\/p>\n

\"The outlook is that the timber market will continue to be very tight in this Baltic Sea region,\" Tilli estimates.<\/p>\n

Some experts predict a decrease in the carrying prices of many wood species for next year. Marko M\u00e4ki-Hakola of MTK, which represents forest owners, hopes that the predictions can be proven wrong.<\/p>\n

\"When the industry situation starts to improve, forest owners have a lot of opportunities. When you remember to tender the wood trade and look for the best buyer, even with the help of the forestry association, that picture is not necessarily the whole truth,\" he says, referring to the forecasts.<\/p>\n

A cold and early winter is good news for forest owners, M\u00e4ki-Hakola continues. Many logging sites can only be accessed when the ground is frozen.<\/p>\n

Maarit Lindstr\u00f6m, chief economist of Mets\u00e4teollisuus ry , points out that \"as much as a medium-sized pulp mill\" worth of processing wood is now burned in a year.
