Central Europe and Canada have decreased the most. In Canada, according to our assessments, sawmill production has been reduced by roughly 20% or roughly 15 million m3 in the last five years.

In Europe, we estimate a production reduction of approx. 15% or 15 million m3 over the past three years. In the southern states of the United States, production has increased somewhat, but does not compensate for the losses in Europe and Canada. This results in an estimated total production reduction in North America and Europe from approx. 200 to 180 million m3. A loss of 20 million m3 over three years may not seem like much, but you have to go back to 2014 to find similar production levels. If you then add that Russian exports to China have decreased by an estimated 2 million m3 in three years and, in principle, disappeared to Europe, we find some kind of balance in the global market.

The turnaround is close in the US if we look at the construction markets in Europe, it still looks night black. The confidence indicators point straight into the abyss for almost all countries. In Sweden the situation is difficult, where construction is soon down to the crisis levels of the 90s. China is struggling with all kinds of problems and consumption is not getting started. The MENA market buys when it's cheap, but unrest in the region is frightening. Japan must probably be considered a bright spot, but is a small market in the context. It is in the USA that we see the great potential.

The US has an extreme need for construction, the economy is booming, unemployment is at a record low, for now anyway. In the US, the average homeowner has loans that are fixed for longer than 20 years and therefore should not be affected as much by short-term changes in interest rates. But if you look at the 30-year mortgage rate and house prices, you see a delayed, but very clear correlation. Our belief is that long-term interest rates have peaked in the US and will fall from now on. The housing market is expected to turn around in the spring-summer of 2024. This could be the big turning point for the wood product market.

Sawmills in many parts of the world have already reduced production and the trend continues.
