The serious situation has escalated during the autumn in line with rampant timber prices,'' says Johan Freij, forestry expert at Danske Bank in a press release.

The prices of sawn wood products have fallen by roughly 10 percent since last summer. Most Swedish sawmills produce lumber at a loss. Investments in increased capacity are now a burden. Danske Bank's analysts predict a consolidation in the sawmill industry in the long term.

''The hope is that low timber stocks and global production cuts will dampen the price drop and benefit the Swedish sawmill industry. The rescue can be found in the American housing construction, which should pick up within six months,'' says Johan Freij.

It's spring for the hardwood forest

Since the turn of the millennium, the hardwood forests in Sweden have increased by 34 percent and they make up just over 20 percent of the forest volume. The birch is the big winner and the spruce the big loser when Swedish forests are adapted to a changing climate.

Diversity and increased commercial value of the hardwood now means that the interest in hardwood forests continues to increase among Sweden's forest owners. Today, hardwoods are mainly used for pulpwood and for energy production. Society's increased demand for long-term sustainable, wood-based products and a predicted future shortage of wood raw material create a completely new situation for Swedish hardwood.

''Hardwood trees are often highlighted because they contribute to biological diversity. But even commercially, hardwood trees are becoming increasingly attractive. Hardwood is indispensable in many paper grades and has a much higher energy value than spruce and pine. The next step will be a sawmill. The proportion of forests with mixed leaves will increase sharply in the future,'' says Johan Freij.

Construction in Europe is slowing down and the price of raw materials is falling.
