There are various global factors here: the general cooling of the economy, the war initiated by Russia in Ukraine, the impact of the cluster crises, but also the wrong decisions of the Estonian state regarding the industrial sector, which are now taking their toll. It must be said that the Estonian state has done everything to ensure that no one wants to invest here and set up a new industry. So the situation is difficult, the visibility of the market is low, and all this has reduced the competitiveness of the local industry," states Hepner.

According to him, the situation in the Estonian wood industry has become more difficult month by month. The economic recession and the shrinking of the construction market are reflected back on the roundwood market. Both softwood and hardwood log prices have clearly decreased in the third quarter. At the same time, pulpwood varieties have become more expensive, softwood pulpwood has made a significant price increase. The price of firewood has also increased. Compared to a year ago, prices have fallen sharply. For example, pine logs have become cheaper by nearly a third over the year, while spruce logs have become cheaper by nearly a fifth (see the price chart, Figure 1, attached).

Just like softwood logs, the coarse assortment of hardwood sold from private forests has become cheaper over the past quarter. Compared to the second quarter, a distinctive feature is the noticeable drop in the price of birch logs and logs. All assortments of softwood logs sold from the Estonian state forest rose in price, unlike the previous quarter, with pine logs becoming more expensive compared to spruce logs. Most of the hardwood logs sold from the state forest have fallen in price over the past quarter.

The demand and price of energy wood is increasing

The price of firewood rose in the third quarter and reached the level of €48.87/m3 in September. For the home consumer, VAT of 20% is added to the above price, which makes the final price €58.64/m3. The price of firewood has risen by 7.8% over the quarter. However, compared to a year ago, the price of firewood today has fallen very strongly.

The price of oil rose by 12.5% in the third quarter of 2023. At the same time, the dollar strengthened against the euro by 0.1% and firewood became more expensive by 2.7%. Thanks to the significant increase in the price of oil and the gentle strengthening of the dollar, and despite the slight increase in the price of firewood, the competitiveness of wood compared to oil has increased considerably. The price of natural gas continued to fall in the 3rd quarter, but now that winter is approaching, it has started to rise, but compared to last year, the price has become almost four times cheaper. The price of gas also has a very strong influence on the European energy market and thus also on the demand and price of energy wood. The average price of CO2 in the third quarter was €83.94/t, which means a 2% decrease compared to the average price of the second quarter and a 5.8% increase compared to the average price of the third quarter of 2022. The price of CO2 has an impact on the use of fossil fuels and thus also on the competitiveness of the price of energy wood.

Estonian wood industry concerns about the future are deepening

As mentioned, the future is bleak for the timber industry. According to the data of the law firm KPMG Law, in the second quarter of this year, the turnover of Estonia's largest wood industry companies fell by 30-40 percent. The biggest concern for the timber industry is the availability and price of raw materials, the state's policy in the direction of reducing felling volumes, and the attitude towards felling necessary to obtain wood.

Experts do not see a quick improvement in the situation. "Since the Estonian wood industry is primarily aimed at export, it is necessary to see how the activity of construction activity is evaluated in our target markets. In Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark, the issuance of new building permits has fallen by 30 to 50 percent. I don't believe that anything will change for the better before 2025," says AS Barrus CEO Martti Kork.

According to Swedbank's building materials sector, construction volumes fell by 16% in the second quarter compared to the second quarter of last year. Swedbank estimates that by the end of the year the decline will be 12% compared to last year. In Sweden, the construction of new buildings has started this year 57% less than last year. 220 companies have gone bankrupt in Finland, which according to statistics is the largest number of bankrupt companies in the last 26 years. Even Estonian entrepreneurs have not escaped bankruptcy. In the middle of October, the Harju County Court declared the bankruptcy of Kaper Moduls OÜ, which mainly sold modular houses to the Swedish market.

According to Swedbank, the decline in the wood and building materials market in Estonia and Finland could stabilize in the new year. However, it is not expected to start growing then, rather there will be a slight stagnation. When thinking about next year, we have to look at how our northern neighbor's wood imports have been in the recent past. Most of the wood imported to Finland, i.e. 54%, was paper wood, 29% wood chips and only 3% saw logs. As the import of roundwood and wood chips from Russia to Finland stopped in July 2022 due to sanctions, Russia's share dropped significantly. Estonia's share in Finnish wood imports increased to 23%, but this did not mean an increase in the amount of wood imported from Estonia - instead, the volume decreased by 10% to 1.3 million m3. Uncertainty makes it impossible to predict the recovery of construction volumes in important export markets.

According to the big entrepreneur Raul Kirjanen, the state with its regulations has pushed the sector backwards from international competition, and in fact there is no clear understanding of how and where to go next. "The wood and forestry industry could be the flagship of the Estonian economy and the biggest winner of the green revolution, but unfortunately it has become the biggest loser in Estonia. A good example is the northern neighbors, where the timber sector feels that the current Finnish government takes into account the needs of forestry and industry in every way. This is both in terms of shaping the local environment and protecting the sector's interests in Europe," says Kirjanen.

The situation in the Estonian timber sector is difficult, there has been an economic recession for several quarters in a row, the rise in interest rates has strongly inhibited construction activities, input prices are high, competitiveness in export markets has … Continue reading →

[4716

post-87092","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-latest-trends

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.9 -
