Back then, customers in Germany were able to buy their wood pellets at similarly low prices as they do now. In some federal states, prices have fallen well below the 300 euro mark, at least at heizpellets24.de. A few weeks ago, pellet experts did not believe that the previous annual low could even be reached.

However, these doubts have vanished into thin air and things continue to decline. “The heating season has begun and the price of pellets continues to fall. This is a good signal for consumers. Heating with pellets means security of supply with a domestic energy source, which is also confirmed by the high production volume in the third quarter of 2023,” says Martin Bentele, Managing Director of the German Pellet Institute (DEPI), explaining the price slide.

Another reason could be that pellet prices are still relatively high in a long-term comparison. According to the DEPI, the annual average prices for wood pellets will have hovered around 240 euros per ton by 2021. The DEPI gave the average monthly price for November at around 350 euros per tonne, more than 100 euros higher. Even with an appropriate inflation surcharge, an average price of permanently under 300 euros seems to be realistic.

Falling wood prices and very large supply

There is therefore no sign of an end to the unusual price decline. An important reason for the persistently low pellet prices is likely to be the sharp drop in the price of wood and wood by-products. The fall in prices observed there continues to put pressure on the prices for heating pellets and is likely to continue to keep them down. In addition, the domestic production of wood pellets, which grew significantly last year, apparently continues to exceed domestic demand (which has also grown), say pellet experts. This also puts a lot of pressure on pellet prices and prevents an increase or slows it down significantly.Customers expect prices to continue to fall

“Many customers are simply too well stocked to become active on the market again despite the attractive prices. The numerous new owners of pellet heating systems who have since put the devices into operation after the boom in applications for funding in August 2022 have also completed their initial stockpiling,” the experts at Heizpellets24 explain the price decline. Last but not least, many customers stocked up on pellets early on, which further reduced the quantities currently purchased.

“In view of the intact downward trend, another customer group is speculating on even cheaper pellet prices and could be successful,” say pellet experts. In some federal states, such as Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Hesse and Schleswig-Holstein, wood pellets cost less than 300 euros per ton and in many other countries only slightly more. Wood pellets are by far the most expensive at heizpellts24 in Bremen and Lower Saxony at 320 to 332 euros per ton.

At holzpellets.net the three most expensive federal states are Bremen, Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia with prices between 355 and 360 euros per ton. The cheapest three prices can be found at holzpellets.net in Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein and Bavaria, each at just over 308 euros per ton.

In some places, pellet prices fall below 300 euros per ton. That hasn’t happened for two years. On average, wood pellets in Germany cost just over 300 euros per ton at the end of November. The massive price drop is actually atypical for … Continue reading →

[4716

post-87088","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-latest-trends

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.9 -
