The Timber Market panel discussion in Karlstad, Sweden organized by the industry organization Svenskt Tr\u00e4 (Swedish Wood), offered insights and discussions on market conditions, trends, and the future of the timber industry in Sweden. This year's edition had a special focus on the role of the forestry and sawmill industry in the green transition. <\/span><\/p>\n

Kerstin Hallsten, Chief Economist at Industriarbetsgivarna (Employers' Association of the Swedish Industry), began the day with an overview of the macroeconomic developments.<\/p>\n

\"It's very much about inflation. But the situation still looks decent as the high inflation is now on its way down,\" noted Hallsten.<\/p>\n

She also emphasized the deteriorating outlook for the construction sector and the abrupt slowdown in the number of construction starts.<\/p>\n

Christian Nielsen, Market Analyst for Skogsindustrierna (Swedish Forestry Industries), discussed the market situation, pointing to a shift from the previous year's high production and delivery levels to a more challenging development in the near term. Despite this, an increasing demand for timber products in the medium and long term is predicted, driven by the interest in increased timber construction, renovations, and energy efficiency. He also addressed the increasingly challenging situation related to national and global raw material supply.<\/p>\n

Claes Andersson, CEO of J G Anderssons S\u00f6ner AB, shared advice for strengthening sustainability efforts. He emphasized the importance of engagement and scrutiny of extended value chains, a clear definition of sustainability in relation to one's own business, and the building of competence and capacity for sustainability work. Claes also highlighted the recently launched Framtidsagenda (Future Agenda) by Skogsindustrin (Forest Industry) as a platform to strengthen the industry's position in the green transition.<\/p>\n

Viveka Beckeman, CEO of Skogsindustrin (Forest Industry), gave a closer presentation of Framtidsagendan and its sustainability promises.<\/p>\n

\"Everyone must contribute. With the Future Agenda, we want to show that we are the engine in the green transition. The key to success is that we do it together and that we do it for real,\" emphasized Viveka Beckeman.<\/p>\n

Paul Brannen from The European Organisation of Sawmill Industry and CEI-Bois emphasized in his speech the importance of showcasing to the world the contributions that the timber industry can make to sustainable development. He highlighted the benefits of renewability, reduced climate emissions, and increased demand for timber products globally. Paul underscored the need for bolder political decisions for the positive climate effects of timber construction to be fully utilized.<\/p>\n

David Hopkins and Nick Boulton from Timber Development UK (TDUK) held a presentation on the British market, a significant export market for Swedish timber products. The British government, in its \"Net Zero Strategy\" and \"England Tree Action Plan,\" has committed to expanding timber construction, anticipating long-term growth for the British timber market as a result. In TDUK's work, understanding the potential and limitations of timber materials is a crucial element.<\/p>\n

\"We work towards being a center of excellence for the British construction industry through guidance, knowledge, and insights into timber construction. In this, we are inspired by the successful work that Svenskt Tr\u00e4 does,\" said David Hopkins.<\/p>\n

The program concluded with a panel discussion in which Linda Andersson, CEO of Derome, Mikael Arvidsson, CEO of Sweden Timber, and Suzane Ljungemo, International Sales Manager at Moelven, participated. The panelists agreed that the coming year looks challenging, but they remained optimistic about the industry's future prospects.
