For Finland's lumber exports, the war in Gaza and especially the expansion of the conflict is a threat hanging in the air, which, if realized, would especially affect the export of pine lumber.<\/span><\/p>\n

In exports to Israel, Koskisen Oy is among the largest.<\/p>\n

\"The crisis is not visible on the market, at least not yet, but all deliveries now go through Haifa,\" says Tommi Sneck , director of the sawmill industry .<\/p>\n

There are two lumber ports in Israel, Haifa in the north and Ashdod near Gaza.<\/p>\n

The small quantitative effect is that forward sales through Israel to the West Bank and Gaza have now stopped.<\/p>\n

\"In Israel, there may be a setback later if the goods exported now remain to fill the warehouses.\"<\/p>\n

Russian lumber determines the price level<\/strong><\/p>\n

The sanctions against Russia indirectly affect the Middle East market more than the war in Gaza. Russia has directed the export of sawn timber where it still can, especially to China, North Africa and the Middle East.<\/p>\n

\"Israel has bought Russian lumber, and it determines the price level there.\"<\/p>\n

According to Sneck, the price level is now such that sawing would not be worthwhile, but sawing must be done. Putting sawing on hold can become even more expensive if customer relations are interrupted and if personnel vote with their feet.<\/p>\n

Stocks of sawn timber are low in both Finland and Sweden, and there are production interruptions in sawmills.<\/p>\n

Sneck has noticed a phenomenon among its customers that they worry about having enough of the goods, which leads to fewer orders.<\/p>\n

\"But the prices have not gone down. The sawmills are sawing with a negative result this year, as a rule.\"<\/p>\n

A changed atmosphere in Egypt<\/strong><\/p>\n

Orasko Oy operating in Utaj\u00e4rvi exports lumber to a total of nine Arab countries. CEO Hany Yacoub says that the buddingly improved market mood has turned into uncertain caution.<\/p>\n

\"People know that if the war spreads, it will become big, and then the only goal is to save one's own life. The negative atmosphere affects purchasing power, construction projects are postponed.\"<\/p>\n

Often, the threat of major crises raises prices, because goods are bought for storage just in case the worst happens, but Yacoub has not noticed such a thing so far. However, he has a message for other sawmill companies regardless of the Gaza war: raise the price.<\/p>\n

\"The world knows that Finnish sawmills are under upward pressure, and the reasons are understood. Finnish goods have a problem-free reputation, and we are ready to pay a little more for them.\"<\/p>\n

Can only wait and see<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sherif Tobgi , director of Alexandria-based sawn timber importer El Tobgi & Co and chairman of the Egyptian-Finnish trade association, stresses that no one knows the duration, outcome and consequences of the war.<\/p>\n

\"But it is known that the effects are negative.\"<\/p>\n

The blow to Egypt's otherwise difficult general economy is considerable, as tourism revenues have already been cut by around 70 percent. The country's economy had already suffered from the rise in energy prices. The most recent official annual inflation figure is almost 40 percent, with foodstuffs up to 70 percent.<\/p>\n

\"Now we can only wait and see, because nothing can be predicted and things are not in our hands.\"<\/p>\n
