factory Moelven Töreboda. Two months ago, 87 employees at Moelven Byggmodul were notified of redundancy.

Reduced projector stock and declining volumes to the construction trade and the industrial segment are the reason for the notification at Moelven Töreboda, according to the company. 25 employees, of which 23 collective employees and two white-collar workers, are notified of dismissal. About 140 people work at the company today.

''Of course, it feels incredibly sad to have to give notice and that some of our employees may have to leave us. Unfortunately, the general decline in the market is starting to have effects on our business as well and we are seeing a declining order intake,'' says Johan Åhlén, CEO of Moelven Töreboda in a press release.

Heavy end of the year

Johan Åhlén, CEO of Moelven Töreboda AB, describes today's market situation as "a completely different everyday life" than in recent years. Between 2020 and 2022, Moelven Töreboda's turnover increased significantly, from SEK 297 million to SEK 425 million. From the middle of 2023, the slowdown in the market began to be felt.

During the first half of 2023, Moelven Töreboda was not affected in a noticeably negative way, despite declining delivery volumes. The unusually large projector backlog that followed into 2023 compensated for the declining economy. During the middle of the summer, however, the situation caught up with the company and the projects no longer came in at the same pace.

''Our industry is having a tough time right now. We have had a good situation for an extra long time thanks to the large projects we had with us into the recession. Now we are facing a completely different everyday life and unfortunately we have to take this difficult step. It is painful, but necessary for us to get through this period,'' says Johan Åhlén about the latest notice.

The CEO believes in a bright future, despite the negative current situation.

''The large project backlog we have had in 2023 shows that when the economy turns, glulam is a hyper-current building material to use,'' he says.

Economically sensitive product

In mid-September, the employees at Moelven Byggmodul AB received a warning notice, and the justification was largely the same as in the case of the notice in Töreboda.

Henrik Asp, CEO of Moelven Byggmodul AB, is convinced that construction in wood has a bright future despite today's tough market situation. Photo: Moelven

''Unfortunately, we see a weak market going forward and that new projects are not coming in at a sufficiently high rate. This means that at the beginning of next year, based on the information we have now, we unfortunately do not have enough work for our staff,'' said Henrik Asp, CEO of Moelven Byggmodul in a press release last fall.

87 employees, most collective employees in Säffle and also some white-collar workers in various locations, may be made redundant. In the long term, the company will concentrate the planning in Värmland and thus that part will be closer to production.

''Our product is cyclically sensitive and in this case we see that, for example, housing projects are affected by the times we are now in with inflation and rising interest rates. The market for rental modules is also weak. Currently, occupancy is relatively good in the factories until the end of the year, but given that we do not have confirmed deals for 2024, we need to act now. By reducing the pace, we adapt the production capacity in a way that means we have production for a longer period of time,'' said Henrik Asp.

Believe in the future of wooden construction

He too has strong hopes for the future, despite a gloomy market at the end of 2023.

''We are working to ensure a rapid increase in production when the market turns. Our ambition is to continue building an even stronger Building Module in the longer term. Sustainable construction in wood is a growing market, we are sure of that. Unfortunately, the market is weak at the moment, but sooner or later it will turn around,'' said Henrik Asp at Moelven Byggmodul.

<div
