The timber trade in Germany shrank by 15% in 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n

The weak construction economy, high building interest rates, inflation and a low number of building permits will pose a significant problem for the German timber trade in 2023.\u00a0By the end of September, sales had fallen by 15% compared to the same period last year, according to the GD Holz business comparison.\u00a0Participants cite both price declines and, to a greater extent, lower demand as causes.<\/p>\n

Up to 20% drop in sales<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe year 2023 is a real challenge for the wood trade because weak demand is met with significant cost increases in operations,\u201d said the managing director of the German Wood Trade Association.\u00a0V. (GD Wood) Thomas Goebel.\u00a0In addition to higher energy costs, this also includes the sometimes drastic increase in toll fees from December 2023.\u00a0As a result, the total costs for truck transport services increase by around 8%, calculations show.<\/p>\n

The prices for sawn timber, planed goods and flooring fell by a good 20% during this period, wood materials fell by minus 14%, garden wood by minus 18% and building elements by minus 4%.\u00a0Sales are declining in both wholesale and retail.<\/p>\n

Gloomy prospects \u2013 timber trade calls for construction funding<\/strong><\/p>\n

The timber trade's expectations for the coming months are very cautious; a large majority of participants in the GD Holz business comparison do not expect the business situation to improve in the coming months.\u00a0The GD Wood therefore calls for the framework conditions for the construction industry to be improved and thus to provide impetus for housing construction and to stimulate the construction industry.<\/p>\n

Wood prices have fallen dramatically<\/strong><\/p>\n

The wood trade association further points out that the prices for important product ranges in the wood sector have long since left their highs from previous years.\u00a0According to official statistics (DESTATIS), for example, prices for solid structural timber have fallen by 28% since the beginning of the year.\u00a0Panic reactions on the market caused the prices for many wood products to explode in 2021 and 2022.<\/p>\n

Timber trade optimistic in the long term<\/strong><\/p>\n

Overall and for the coming years, the wood trade sees itself in a good position with wood as a material and its product ranges, as wood construction is at the top of the agenda in Germany and Europe in order to effectively counteract climate change with its CO2 binding potential.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
