<\/span>The forest company MM Kotkamills is closing down its sawmill operations in Kotka, Finland and laying off 64 employees from the sawmill. The company has concluded the change negotiations regarding the closing of the sawmill.<\/p>\n

MM Kotkamills CEO P\u00e4ivi Suutari considers the situation unfortunate.<\/p>\n

''The operation of the sawmill has been unprofitable for a year already, and there has been no significant change for the better. In addition, the price of logs has remained high, and the selling prices of sawn timber are low. It's an equation that boils down to unprofitability,'' Suutari said.<\/p>\n

In addition, various investments should be made in the sawmill to make it competitive.<\/p>\n

Kotkamills was founded in 2010. In 2020, Austrian cardboard company Mayr-Melnhof bought Kotkamills for 425 million euros.<\/p>\n

MM Kotkamills Wood is the oldest sawmill in Finland operating in its original location, though of course nowadays with modern production technology. Annual capacity of the sawmill is 220,000 m\u00b3 of sawn timber, mostly used for construction and joinery purposes due to high visual and strength qualities.
