The third quarter of 2023 financial results reflect the impact of diverse factors such as production disruptions, softening demand, and price fluctuations.

Interfor

Interfor Corporation reported a net loss of $42.4 million in Q3’23, contrasting starkly with the $3.5 million in net earnings reported during the same quarter in 2022. The downward trajectory in earnings can be attributed to a confluence of factors, including weakened lumber prices and production limitations stemming from the temporary closure of a British Columbia sawmill due to wildfires.

With lumber production at 1.0 billion board feet and shipments down by 108 million board feet from the previous quarter, Interfor's recent performance indicates a significant adjustment in operations to align with the evolving market dynamics. The company's average selling price of $661 per mfbm in Q3'23, representing a modest $12 per mfbm increase compared to Q2'23, reflects the persistent volatility in lumber prices influenced by prevailing economic uncertainties and fluctuating interest rates.

West Fraser

Similarly, West Fraser faced a decline in net sales by over 18% year over year, with its wood product markets experiencing sustained pressure from diminished housing starts and higher interest rates. Despite the challenges, the company's North America EWP business stood out as a beacon of resilience, achieving a consolidated operating profit of $185 million. However, a decrease in the company's fair value estimate for the New York Stock Exchange and a subsequent increase in the fair value estimate for Toronto Stock Exchange-listed shares reflect the market's cautious outlook on near-term revenue.

West Fraser's lumber segment continued to struggle amid lower demand and lackluster pricing. Weak new residential construction continues to weigh on the segment and there has been little sign of improvement. Higher interest rates have frozen the housing market, with many opting to stay in their current home and renters opting to wait to purchase. This has severely affected demand for lumber used in new residential construction, which accounts for a material portion of West Fraser’s lumber business.

Canfor

Meanwhile, Canfor Corp. encountered a significant third-quarter loss of $65 million, largely attributed to the struggles within its pulp operations. The impact of the global oversupply of pulp and lackluster demand has posed substantial challenges for the company, contributing to a broader decline in year-to-date revenues compared to the same period in 2022.

While lumber prices in 2023 are a lot lower than in 2022 (when they were hitting record or near record prices), it’s not lumber prices so much that has dragged Canfor’s third quarter earnings into the so much as global pulp prices.

Year-to-date, Canfor reported revenues of $4.1 billion compared to $6 billion for the same period of 2022.

“Although global lumber markets remained under pressure in the quarter, our U.S. South operations continued to deliver strong earnings,” Canfor CEO Don Kayne said in a press release. “When combined with solid earnings from Europe and slightly better results from our Western Canadian operations, this outcome underscores the importance of our global diversification strategy.

Outlook

North American lumber markets over the near term are expected to remain volatile as the economy continues to adjust to inflationary pressures, elevated interest rates, labour shortages and geo-political uncertainty.

Interfor expects that over the mid-term, lumber markets will continue to benefit from favourable underlying supply and demand fundamentals. Positive demand factors include the advanced age of the U.S. housing stock, a shortage of available housing and various demographic factors, while growth in lumber supply is expected to be limited by extended capital project completion and ramp-up timelines, labour availability and constrained global fibre availability.

Canadian lumber industry’s first 3 major players, Interfor Corporation, West Fraser, and Canfor Corp., continue to grapple with a challenging landscape.
