According to China Customs, between January and September 2023 CIF prices for logs and sawnwood imports declined year on year.<\/span><\/p>\n

The decline in CIF prices for both logs and sawnwood imports was because global ocean freight rates have fallen sharply and because stocks at Chinese ports iare high due to weak demand.<\/p>\n

Timber industry in China faces setbacks in September<\/strong><\/p>\n

In September, the China index for the timber industry witnessed a significant decline, dropping to 37.3%. This decrease of 15.3 percentage points from the previous month brought it below the critical value of 50%. This shift signals a contraction in the business prosperity of the timber enterprises represented in the index compared to August.<\/p>\n

The production index also experienced a decline, reaching 34%, down by 22 percentage points from the previous month. This decrease placed it below the critical value for the second consecutive month, indicating a lower production volume for the timber enterprises represented in the index, compared to August.<\/p>\n

Similarly, the new orders index fell to 40%, reflecting a 13 percentage point decrease from the previous month. This drop placed it below the critical value for the second consecutive month, signifying a decrease in the number of new orders for the timber enterprises represented in the index compared to August.<\/p>\n

Contrastingly, the export orders index rose to 50%, marking an 8 percentage point increase from the previous month. This increase broke a five-month streak of decline, suggesting that the number of export orders for the timber enterprises represented in the index remained stable compared to August.<\/p>\n

On 15 September, the National Bureau of Statistics released macroeconomic data for August, revealing a 3.2% decrease in China's exports and a 1.6% decrease in imports. Additionally, in the industrial sector, profits of industrial enterprises grew by 17% year-on-year, achieving positive growth for the first time since the second half of last year.<\/p>\n
