The amount corresponds to one and a half times the amount of wood cut from state forests and, according to Kumpula, affects the carbon sink of Finland's forests.

"When efforts are made within the EU to limit the use of forests for climate reasons, this need to replace Russian raw wood should be taken into account."

Ten governments during the felling plan

Kumpula sees the EU's efforts to limit the use of forests as a big challenge.

"The old forests that are part of the biodiversity strategy are already largely out of operation and the goals of the restoration regulation are being fulfilled. The biggest challenge is related to the 30 percent conservation goal, when their consequences are unknown."

Kumpula reminds that Metsähallitus' felling plans stretch back four decades.

"There will be ten governments, so I am very suspicious of political logging restrictions and consider them short-sighted. The forestry industry is a business that is sensitive to economic cycles, which is why annual timber harvesting amounts should be looked at over a long period of time instead of a few years."

According to Kumpula, the assessment of the overall effects of forest use also includes carbon leakage.

"Demand for forest industry products will not disappear, but will be diverted to other countries or, at worst, to fossil and non-renewable raw materials, if we limit the use of forests."

Severe shortage of wood

"You could send a thank-you note to the Kremlin for this.
