During this AGM, Nils Olaf Petersen, from GD Holz, was elected as the new general secretary from 2024. He succeeds Thomas Goebel.

As usual, a round table discussion took place regarding market forecasts.

In Germania, the construction and renovation sector is showing signs of slowing down, with negative variations in turnover for sawn timber, panels, building elements, planed products, flooring and garden products. The shortage of skilled labor remains a challenge.

In Belgia, turnover fell by 17% in the wood industry, while panel production stagnated. Inflation is down, but labor costs are up 15%. The outlook for 2024 is cautious.

In Danemarca, the outlook for 2024 is more optimistic, with a slight decrease in inflation and increased demand for labor, particularly in the construction sector. However, prices could drop due to excess inventory.

In Italy, growth was slightly lower at 5.7% in July 2023. Prices are falling every month, and building permits are falling due to high interest rates. Businesses are optimistic about the medium term due to EU policies on energy efficiency.

In Spain, GDP grew by 2.3% in 2023, but timber import statistics are declining. Residential investments are affected by supply and demand factors, including the high cost of building materials. The economic and political situation is uncertain.

In the Netherlands the economy slowed in 2023, with GDP growth forecast at 0.7%. Inflation remains high, but labor shortages in various sectors are easing pressure on purchasing power. Imports decreased by 12% in 2022, while exports increased. Production of traditional building systems is expected to decline by 2.5% in 2024.

In Austria, expectations are less optimistic, with GDP growth of just 0.3% in 2023. Inflation remains high, but a decline is expected in 2024. The industry is calling for policy measures to address the energy, climate and economic crisis.

In summary , the situation of wood markets in Europe is declining and marked by significant variations from one country to another, with a shortage of labor in certain sectors and uncertainties linked to inflation and the demand for construction materials. The outlook for 2024 is cautious but overall quite optimistic.

For Central Africa , it was commented that the situation is complicated for businesses, due to a gloomy international context. The situation in Cameroon is also characterized by tensions linked in part to taxation. In the Republic of Congo, the ban on exporting tropical wood logs is the subject of discussion, even if the measure is in principle effective. Measures should be able to be taken to further facilitate the export of logs.

In Gabon , logistical difficulties continue to be high, but the export situation has returned to normal, following the uncertainties linked to the EUTR a few days ago. ATIBT, UFIGA and industry players continue to discuss with government authorities and the European Commission.

The last ETTF General Assembly was held in Vienna on October 13.
