Germany's timber market is witnessing a sustained decline in the prices of pine and spruce logs, as evidenced by the latest producer price indices released by Destatis for August 2023. <\/span>The data portrays a notable downturn in the pricing of various log qualities, indicating potential challenges for the forestry industry at large.<\/p>\n

According to the data, the average index for log wood showed a significant decline of -9.2%, resting at 94.8 points for spruce. Notably, B qualities recorded a notable downturn, reaching 97 points (-10.7%), primarily influenced by 3-meter lengths, which experienced a decline of -10.4% to 98.6 points. Similarly, the index for 4\/5-meter lengths was calculated at 96.2 points, reflecting a substantial decrease of -12.4%.<\/p>\n

In the case of C qualities, the figures for August stood at 87.3 points (-7.7%), with 92.7 points (-8.1%) for 3-meter lengths and 89.4 points (-7.6%) for 4\/5-meter lengths. The B\/C qualities experienced a decline, reaching 95.4 points (-7.7%) compared to the previous month.<\/p>\n

Turning the focus to specific timber types, the report noted that the index for spruce pulpwood stood at 109.5 points, indicating a modest increase of 2.75%. In contrast, pulpwood of pine and Douglas fir faced declines, with pine reaching 112 points (-5.3%) and Douglas fir pulpwood reaching 73.8 points (-7.1%). The overall softwood pulpwood index exhibited a downward trajectory, measuring 107.8 points (-6.8%).<\/p>\n

Analyzing the year-on-year trends, the data revealed a consistent downward trajectory for the spruce indices, showcasing decreases across various categories. Specifically, the log wood index witnessed a decline of -7.9%, while B and C qualities recorded drops of -6.6% and -7.3%, respectively. The year-on-year trends for specific lengths of B and C qualities followed a similar pattern, with 3-meter and 4\/5-meter lengths experiencing decreases of -5.7% and -8.6% for B qualities, and -7.6% and -8.9% for C qualities. The B\/C quality category faced a substantial decline of -10.1%, whereas the industrial quality segment witnessed a notable rise of 12.8%.<\/p>\n

Similarly, for pine, the indices pointed towards a downward trajectory, with the average log wood index witnessing a decrease of -4.8% to 85.4 points. Notably, B qualities demonstrated a significant decline, reaching 94.1 points (-11.5%).<\/p>\n
