Germany's timber trade clearly feels the weakening construction sector and the hesitant demand throughout the current year, and is looking into an uncertain future in many respects. However, the storm-tested entrepreneurs seem far from letting this get them down<\/span>, and are using events such as the Timber Trade Day in Berlin, the International Softwood Conference in Vienna, and the upcoming Wood Industry Day in Cologne for networking, likely generating one or two ideas - for example, what type of wood can replace Siberian larch and how to handle all the bureaucracy rolling towards the industry.<\/p>\n

Sales and price developments of the most important assortments in the German timber trade were declining in the first seven months of 2023. Given the also decreasing number of building permits issued, a restrained business is also expected in the near future. Only one-fifth of the companies surveyed monthly in the GD Holz operational comparison recently expected sales at the previous year's level.<\/p>\n

\"Therefore, GD Holz urgently demands impulses for residential construction, suggestions from the Ministry of Construction for degressive depreciation and postponement of the EH40-KFW standard for new construction are a good approach,\" said GD Holz Managing Director Thomas Goebel recently. In addition, consumer uncertainty must come to an end - for example, through long-term support for new construction and renovation.<\/p>\n

Timber construction was also in focus at the 2023 Timber Trade Day, which was attended by more than 90 entrepreneurs invited by GD Holz to Berlin. After the keynote speech \"The Bauhaus of the Earth - the future of timber construction in urban areas\" by Prof. Dr. J\u00fcrgen P. Kropp, Head of the Research Group \"Urban Transformations\" at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), a lively panel discussion continued the topic. According to this, in practice, \"hybrid buildings\" still hide a lot of concrete, often due to the still insufficient political will to really get timber started. Many investors still need to be convinced - some already are. A realistic life cycle assessment - which does not end with the burning of a wooden house after 50 years - is also indispensable as a basis for tendering in order to assert the advantages of wood. Fortunately, this is also part of the now adopted Federal Timber Construction Initiative. However, for convincing large-scale modular construction, there is often simply a lack of skilled workers.<\/p>\n

To appeal to both consumers and personnel, Digital Business Consultant Sanjay Sauldie introduced timber retailers to the art of influencer marketing. Meanwhile, Matthias Haas, a futurist and trend observer, showed wholesale timber traders ways in which new technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence, can help alleviate labor shortages. Thus, showrooms could become a thing of the past thanks to VR glasses in the future. Companies like Rewe already accept applications from new employees via voicemail. Shifts are staffed autonomously and the field service is supported by augmented reality glasses or the diligent helper \"Cobot.\"<\/p>\n

In the plenum, Dr. Ralf Uterm\u00f6hlen, owner, managing partner, and environmental auditor of AGIMUS GmbH, presented perspectives on sustainability and climate neutrality in the timber trade. According to him, credibility and thus verifiability are not only necessary for stimulating demand and recruiting personnel but increasingly also for assessing creditworthiness. Uterm\u00f6hlen advised a self-confident appearance of the industry - with the simple facts up their sleeves - and an increasing focus on after-sales service. For example, when selling a terrace, the conclusion of a maintenance contract would be conceivable to keep it going as long as possible.<\/p>\n

In general, the guest speakers at the event saw plenty of opportunities in all the turbulence that the industry currently and in the future has to face, and these were discussed vigorously during the networking breaks.<\/p>\n

While the next Timber Trade Day will take place in Frankfurt am Main in 2024, the next Wood Industry Day is just around the corner. The 17th edition will take place from November 7th to 8th, 2023, in Hall 8 of the Koelnmesse. Even before the event, the organizers have noted an extraordinary success: the exhibition space is completely sold out. Companies from the entire timber trade, timber industry, and service providers are represented at the Wood Industry Day, informed GD Holz.<\/p>\n

\"We are very happy that we can welcome more than 160 exhibitors from 17 countries to this year's Wood Industry Day. We have even slightly exceeded the number of exhibitors from our pre-corona comparison year 2019,\" explained the managing director of GD Holz, Thomas Goebel.<\/p>\n
