EU's softwood lumber exports in the first half of 2023 fell by 38% in value to a good \u20ac5 billion compared to the same period last year. The export volume to the USA increased by 4%. <\/span><\/p>\n

According to information from EOS based on Eurostat data, Germany's exports grew by 14% to 1.5 million m3, Sweden's by 24% to 630,000 m3. Finland's exports to the USA increased by a remarkable 71% to 84,000 m3. Austria (-25% to 209,000 m3) and Romania (-31% to 189,000 m3) recorded negative developments. Overall, the USA imported 19.9 million m3 of softwood lumber from January to July 2023, 7% less than in the same period last year.<\/p>\n

Exports from the EU to North Africa, which were still high last winter - especially from Sweden - have declined.\u00a0While deliveries to Egypt have decreased, the Algerian market has recently revived.\u00a0China's softwood log imports are currently declining, according to Mathias Fridholm from Swedish Wood, who spoke at the International Softwood Conference (ISC).\u00a0In August 2023 the decline was 8% compared to the previous year.<\/p>\n

While imports from New Zealand remained stable, those from Europe were reduced by 24% in terms of value.\u00a0Lumber also decreased.\u00a0Stock levels in the ports are currently comparatively low.\u00a0This also applies to Japan, whose softwood lumber imports are also declining.\u00a0However, the EU has recently gained significant shares here - especially from North America.\u00a0However, imports are currently facing strong competition from domestic timber due to currency weakness, Hanwa's Eiji Sahara reported at ISC.<\/p>\n

In other parts of South-East Asia, however, imports of European softwood lumber rose to record levels, with other supplying countries losing shares.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
